Devastating news for a family in England

There was a terrible tragedy in our capital just a few days ago. A 24-year-old girl and her friend, on holiday from England, spent an afternoon drinking before deciding to go for a ride on an e-scooter. They ran into a 51-year-old father of two who fell onto the pavement, hitting his head. He was taken to hospital and later died. The girl in now in custody and has been refused bail. Her case will become before the courts in July. This is so sad for the family of the deceased and for the family of the girl. The father was the sole provider for his family so their lives are in turmoil at the moment. And imagine hearing that your child is in jail in another country, and charged with manslaughter. The news item said that, between 2017 and 2022, over 70 people have died or been injured from e-scooter accidents. New laws are likely to be brought in but it seems a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

That is really sad news! I'm sorry that happened and hope the man's spouse can take over as the breadwinner quickly.

I think he was Vietnamese so it all depends on their circumstances. If she doesn't have good English and was very dependent on him, then it might be quite difficult for her.

@JudyEv Maybe... It also depends on how large a family they have there. Their family may take them in and help them.

Oh my, that is such a terrible news for both parties. It is definitely difficult and devastating for both families. Here, we have a lot of accidents of scooter and motorcycle as well.

It is very sad as you say. The parents may not be in a position to come to Australia, not that they can do much anyway.

That's awful. People need to never drink and drive anything.

@JudyEv I totally agree. One thing I had never thought about until a few years ago when I heard it on the news are people getting arrested for "boating under the influence", especially during holidays. What is wrong with some people drinking too much while sailing a boat?!

I hadn't heard this but I rarely watch the news. So very sad, and now two families with a lot to deal with.

It may not have been reported over there. It probably wasn't even reported in the east of our country.

@Traceyjayne That's a good point. I don't think it was ever mentioned what part of England she was from. I just checked. All the reports just say she is a UK backpacker.

Oh, how terrible for everyone involved. We have what you might call E-scooters here as well. The drivers often take them on the smaller highways, dart through busy intersections. and drive right in front of cars. There needs to be some stricter regulations/laws for them, for sure.

They've already banned them from being hired so that's a start. Some councils have them available and you can pay online but I guess those will be taken away too.

@JudyEv I have a feeling ours will be taken away, or more strictly regulated.

If the new laws can save one person then it will be worth it. We have very strict laws on e scooters here and for the most part these laws are obeyed Our police went on a spree of confiscating these things where they were being used on roads illegally and I think that has worked. I think Currently, electric scooters can only be used on private land with the landowner’s permission. It is effectively illegal to use them on public roads, on pavements, in cycle lanes and in pedestrian-only areas. I think that this is a sensible well thought out law.

They immediately stopped the hire of eScooters but haven't gone further than that yet. I like your rules.

@Ineeddentures They switch from road to sidewalk as they feel like it, and at quite a speed.

@JudyEv Haha Well The rules are broken every day all over Scotland. Even on our small town there are a few of the buzzing about on the roads. Dodging them is not easy

It is very sad for all involved. New laws do not heal old injuries, for sure. Com.mon sense would help some.

I would think the girl is a bit sad at the moment. It's certainly ruined her holiday.

shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted would be the perfect saying considering how much we know about the dangers of drinking and driving any kind of vehicle ..... I've never seen an e-scooter in my neck of the woods

They are quite common here. Some councils have them. They are a great idea but of course there are always some who abuse their use and spoil it for everyone else.

Very sad news. You can't do that over here, why do they think they can get away with it in Australia.

I should think she is bound to get a jail sentence. They won't grant her bail in case she skips the country. Imagine her poor family.

That was really sad. Youngsters in India too often get caught in hit and run cases. Drunken driving shouldn't be allowed.

I don't think kids think that driving an Escooter while drunk is a problem but of course it is. They have now banned the hire of escooters.
