I was surprised, it was not a scam

Like many people, I check social media on my phone in between other activities. Bob was driving us towards the stores after church yesterday, and I got a message request on Facebook messenger. The message said "I work at North Dillons, and we have your checkbook." I checked the profile on the person, who had a longish foreign language name. It said she was a content creator. I was tempted to ignore or deny the message, but we were near that store, so I went in to customer service. The only checkbook that we had missing had been gone for the most part of a year. It was on a new account at the time that we use only for savings and emergencies. I replaced it when I could not find it, thinking it would show up in my messy house. The person working customer service went to the back. She came back and asked for my name and ID. They did have my long lost check book, the person in the message does work there and they had decided to go through lost and found. I never had checked there because I do not write checks there and did not think of it. The only check we had written was last July, to our county courthouse. She went to some trouble to find me on Facebook. My phone number is not on the checks. That started my week with good news.

It really did. My first thought was to delete it, but it was convenient for me to go in. I also wanted to let the store know someone was running a scam using their name. I was so pleasantly surprised to find it to be true.

If someone was using the store as part of their scam I wanted to do my good deed and let the store know. It worked well all the way around.

It has probably been sitting in their lost and found since last July. I am impressed that they decided to clean out the lost and found. Going through things and locating owners took some extra effort on their part.

Wow that's really a surprise to find not only your checkbook but that someone went out of their way to find you and let you know. I probably would have ignored it and though it was a scam.

If we had not been planning on going to that store at some point that day, and just very nearly driving past at the times I would have not wanted to be bothered, and decided it was a scam.

The funny thing is, you could've lost it anywhere and someone dropped it off in that particular lost and found.

It is not likely it would have come from outside, unless I dropped it in the parking lot. It is not a publicized service, just random things that get left in the store. It is true, however, that I could have dropped it anywhere in the store or on their property. They keep everything in their locked "money room" at customer service if it gets turned in..

I was bored, plus one of her four names was the same as the last name of a friend from church. It is not a real common name.

It was. I do not write checks in that store, and this checking account is one where we put money to pay for trips and for property taxes and car tags, so I do not use it often anyway.

That was good of her to go to so much trouble to find you. It's not always easy nowadays to get contact details for a person.

It was good. My address was on the checks, but that would have been letters back and forth etc. Social media to the rescue.
