Ice Cubes

June 9, 2025 6:13pm CST
Ice cubes It occurred to me that I should post a discussion about our ice cubes as people might like to know how we make them. We put water in the wee cube tray and then freeze it. When frozen we take the cubes out of the tray and put them in a zip freezer bag and then put the bag in the freezer too along with the next cube tray filled with water It's cheaper than buying ice in bags in the freezer shop One day I bought a bag of ice from the freezer shop put it in the luggage box and forgot all about it I then had a box full of water as the bag had broken and when they melted... Do you make your own ice cubes Maybe.you have a machine....

My relatives and I use water to place in an ice cube tray to make ice cubes since the ice cube machine inside the home does not work.

@LadyDuck I cannot drink my Gin or my Jim Beam without adding ice cubes. I even put ice cubes in Coca Cola. And lemonade. And sometimes just in plain tap water

@Ineeddentures I don’t put ice in my drinks and ask for no ice (if possible) when I order them at restaurants because it dilutes the drink if you don’t drink it quick. And I don’t. After we put the filter into our fridge we had to drain a lot of water before we can use it for drinking and to make ice. We never did that. And so our ice maker is off.

No. Our fridge does not have an ice maker. Why do you not use the ice maker on your fridge Lena? Do you not use ice in drinks?

Yep. We make them. Or, I should say our freezer does. Automatically. It has an ice maker built in.

To be honest we don't use a lot of ice. Should we need it, we make our own though. You can get trays with different shapes these days but ours is the basic cube tray.

Ours is very basic cube tray as well. Ice cubes . I don't see much point in fancy shapes when a cube will do the job perfectly well and cool our drinks down

@Ineeddentures My ex and I bought a fancy schmancy fridge/freezer with automatic icemaker and sure enough the icemaker broke after a couple of years. We were back to ice cube trays.

@NJChicaa That's the way it goes. And that is exactly what would happen to me. And I will not give my wife the chance to say I told you so

We always have ice cubes ready in the upper section freezer of our refrigerator. We have never bought ice bags. Are they costly? I will not pay for something that is so easy and free to make.

@Ineeddentures Hmm....one would not go for it unless there is an emergency situation like refrigerator not working. Or you have too much of money to throw away buying ice cubes.

Costly.. I think buying already made ice cubes was costly because we could have made them for free . So basically when we bought them it was a bit of a waste of money which is a bit costly. I cannot recall how much but I think about £2 for maybe a kg of ice cubes

In fact it is easy to make ice cubes at home. The problem is there are so many food in my fridge already and this is why I don't often make ice cubes. I ever thought about buying an ice cube maker but then I cancelled this plan. Perhaps I don't really need them so often and I hate to buy something that I don't often use. It's a kind of wasting money.

My uncle used to buy them from the store. My mother makes her own ice cubes from ice trays. She noticed that one ice tray was using has a hole in it and one had broke. She puts the ice cubes she makes in a container.

Our fridge is one of those fancy ones that is supposed to make ice-blocks. It's sort of okay but I should really do what you do so I have some 'real' cubes.
