This bill now deems it necessary for kids in 3rd grade to learn cursive. They must be good in doing so by the 5th grade or must get the help they need to be able to. This bill goes in effect July 1, 2025 and will start at the beginning of the next school year.
This sort of bugs me because my grandson never learned cursive and can't read it very well. It was not a part of the curriculum when he was in school. I find this rather sad.

There's really no reason for kids now to know how to read/write in cursive. It was dropped from school curriculums because everything was going online and computers don't write in cursive.

Yes, indeed. Well, now it's back. Here in Idaho anyway.

I remember when our son was in grade 2, he was in a grade 2/3 split class.
One day the teacher approached me after school when I was waiting to take him home, and he told me that he had gotten ahead in his grade 2 work, and while he was teaching the older grade cursive writing, our son learned it too.
It was really natural for him.

That's a good thing. My granddaughter was in a mixed class too. She never went to preschool. I taught it all to her at home. She was so easy to teach. Later she hated school because it was so boring.

@celticeagle Our son began in Junior Kindergarten, which was a straight class as was Kindergarten, but when he entered grade one he was 1 of just 8 children in a 1/2 split. He was in a split grade right up until grade 4. He was a quick learner and was reading at the age of 4 years.

They did semi teach my daughter when she was in second grade. It was mostly just a packet they gave them to work on at their own leisure. My daughter was very little when she was able to read it. She could read it long before she could write it. It was really neat!

He is no longer in school. We spend a lot time together anyway. We are pals. Both Scorpios.

I'm glad they reinstated it. We started learning in 1st grade. I'm sorry your grandson never learned it.

I learned it early on as well. The teachers were stickers back then that each letter was drawn right.

I think they should know. Too many of our old documents are written in cursive

I don't know why schools stopped teaching cursive. Only half of my grandkids can read & write in cursive so I have to remember when I send a birthday card which kids I can write in cursive and which ones I can't.
Hope your grandson masters cursive writing easily.
