You can't help stupid #2

In my last discussion, I wrote about the groundsman at my husband’s school who was a bit short on commonsense and even shorter on intelligence. Some time after the lawn incidence, the same guy had a Workers Compensation claim citing a sore arm. When Vince inquired about it, it seems the man had been standing on a Sulo/wheelie bin, cutting off a branch with a chainsaw. The branch fell on him, knocking him off the bin. The groundsmen had recently had a workshop on safety including never using a chainsaw without a second person in attendance, and certainly never to use a bin instead of a ladder. I feel I might have written about this before, but it would have been years ago. The photo is of our method of moving two bins at once.

They'd had training courses on how to do things safely. He obviously didn't listen.

But it takes time to go get a ladder and find someone to watch you do the work... Much faster to just get it done and over with.

I have to admit I'd be thinking that way too. It's difficult to get anything done these days with all the rules and regulations you're expected to follow.

@JudyEv A lot of people DO think that way... I wouldn't have climbed on top of a trash can, though. Those things are flimsy here. I'd be scared it would fall or break under my weight. I had one low level boss at Walmart that was always telling me to "hurry up, I was taking too long" when I followed the company rules about using ladders. I finally asked another low level boss to hide while I did something by the book so they reported my direct boss to the store manager for telling me to cut corners. My boss got fired for it... Good riddance!

It’s amazing he can get worker’s comp for being a dingbat.

I guess it can be difficult to prove someone is a dingbat.

A bin is not stable he was stupid to be standing on it.

Exactly. There were plenty of ladders in the storeroom.

One of my son's friends had to get something from a very high shelf in his garage. Instead of going for a ladder, he propped a bicycle up against the wall and stood on the seat! Of course, it fell over and so did he, and broke his arm. You know what they say, you can't fix stupid.

Surely that would have looked very unstable even to a kid. All you can do is hope he learnt from it.

@judyev You posted that photo a while back (no criticism intended) and next day I saw wheelie bins being transported up a long driveway in the same fashion just outside Larne. I thought to myself “Maybe these people are Australian”.
