During a country ramble this morning we came across what is locally known as the hidden village. Ten or so cottages like the one in the photo above were abandonned over the course of time. In the 1820s the population was about 60 and it dwindled sharply after that. The final resident was a Cistercian monk who lived there in isolation and died in 2013.
Of course Ireland is littered with such abandoned habitations, mostly to do with famine, evictions and emigration. This one is 15 miles from my house, concealed in the hills along the coast.

That is very quaint. No doubt alot of man hours went into the construction.

What a wonderful piece of history. It's amazing how many hidden treasures we can find in our country ramblings. Thanks for sharing.

There used to be a house that looked similar to that at the back of our farm when I was a kid. We explored through it but there wasn't anything to find.
