How They Escaped

I think I mentioned to one person on Mylot last week that my cousin was stuck in Israel. The details on how he got out are just crazy to me. I’ll try to keep this short. He and his wife were asked to come to Israel by some organization, but as we know the war with Iran started, and they closed the airspace. Eventually, they and the others with them were smuggled into Jordan. One of their guides kept posting their location on FB so the people trying to get them to safety narrowed it down to which guide it was, and had to threaten him to stop. Eventually, they got them to Cyprus, where they sat in a plane on the tarmac for four hours before Trump gave word that the plane would be allowed to come back (I know I’m not phrasing that right, but the reason was something like planes from Cyprus don’t have an agreement in certain airspace…I’m not great on that detail). Anyway, they landed back in the United States on Thursday (or was it Friday?). I saw the coverage on CNN and FOXNews. It was the first time I have seen him with a beard, and understandably, he looked about 20 pounds thinner. Meanwhile, somehow his wife looked unruffled. That just seemed crazy to me. I doubt they’ll want to go anywhere for awhile. You know what he was also disappointed about? Being too tired to be there for my dad’s birthday party Saturday.

Cypress or Cyprus? The aircraft registered in Cyprus do not currently fly directly to the United States because the FAA hasn't assessed Cyprus's aviation authority for safety standards. Of course this was an emergency and I am glad they were allowed to go directly to the USA.

Thank you for correcting me, Anna! I’ll change it. And yes, you explained that better than I could.

@AmbiePam We had a friend who lived in Cyprus and he always came to France when he had planned a trip in the United States.

He has recovered, apparently, for your dad's birthday. BTW, Happy birthday to your dad. It's good that they were able to come back the soonest, or else they would be stuck there. It seems Israel thinks Iran had broken the ceasefire agreement. Hence, we're back to square one.

He wishes he could have come, but he was too worn out. And thank you for the birthday wishes for my dad!

That was quite some escape. In countries under conflict, it can be very tough for people at times if they get trapped in conflict zones. I am not sure what are the plane restrictions wrt US for Cyprus but anyways they managed to get back safely and that is what matters.

I’m not sure either. I didn’t explain why it was a problem well at all. I just know they had to get Trump’s permission.

How very frightening, but thank goodness they are both back in the US again. You Dad must be such a remarkably special man that after fleeing for their safety, their regret is being too tired to attend his party. I hope that they are getting caught up on their rest now.

Oh, I imagine they were so thrilled to finally get home again. It could have ended so badly. It had to be just terrifying.

Awww about the birthday. It seems perilous to travel anywhere anymore. So glad they both are safe and are at home.

I can't imagine being in a war zone in a foreign country and not be able to get home. Such a scary thought. I'm glad they got home safely.

Glad they were able to make it out...understandable that he was too tired, as I'm sure he had jetlag as well. Hopefully he will do something special for your Dad for his birthday.

No doubt that he looked exhausted. It must have been a turmoil, exhausting them physically and mentally. And such experiences do scare you and you would not like to go anywhere for a while. But glad that he I'd back safe and sound.
