An innovative lawn-mower

If you look carefully at the photo, I hope you can make out a pushbike with an old-fashioned lawnmower attached to the front. The notice is a tongue-in-cheek spiel about how appropriate this would be for the lady of the house. She could mow the lawn while her husband sat in the shade with a stubby of beer. I would have news for that man! I don’t know if they were ever marketed. I think it is more something that someone made up. If that was the case, he obviously had too much time on his hands.

It IS pretty funny, though.

@JudyEv I've never had a wife that would help me with chores around our homes... Pretty will if I keep griping until she helps me, though.

I can imagine the man dreaming about sitting back watching his wife riding this.

@DaddyEvil Viince helps very little about the house other than maintenance chores. Mostly my fault for not asking for help.

I would mow the lawn using such a thing if it actually worked. Seems very efficient and not at all dangerous or back-pain inducing like a regular push mower.

That's true but I think it might take a lot of effort unless the grass was very short.

@allknowing I think it is just a fun one-off thing that a guy has made up in his workshop. I can't imagine it ever being used to cut grass.

It would be really hard to push through grass. You'd need very strong leg muscles.

We never had a pushbike, but we had exactly the same manual lawnmower. My husband wanted one pretending he always used one when he was a teenager. Guess how many times he used it?

@JudyEv - You are correct, they are difficult to push, this is why my husband NEVER used it. He tried once, it was too hard, stored it in the garden room and never took it out again.

I think Damian in Ireland had one for a while. It probably didn't get used too often either. They were difficult to push. So did your husband use it twice - or just once??

@JudyEv Those manual mowers are actually having a bit of a renaissance over here. Modern houses have such tiny gardens and usually with a miniscule bit of lawn, it's not worth the expense of getting a powered lawnmower and of course there's nowhere to store such a big machine either. But if you don't cut it at all then you don't have a lawn. So what to do? You can't really crawl around with shears, and hiring someone to mow for five minutes would be ridiculous. My friend has a push mower and she gets her children to push it around. I think if you do it often enough it's quite easy.

@Fleura I think the key words would be 'doing it often enough'. It would make sense for a small area. We have a tiny patch of lawn but Vince has bought an electric mower. We didn't really think about one of these.

I guess it would work but you'd need really strong leg muscles. I've pushed one of these types of mowers and it's not particularly easy.

Sitting in the shade.... Stubby, nay, but a Jug would suffice oh pedal the bike swiftly

So you'd let Yvonne do the mowing. Perhaps you could attach such a mower to the front of one of your motorbikes. That would make more sense.

I have seen images of similar, but not painted up all shiny and bright. I would flat fall over if I tried to ride it.

I've seen the mower part and bikes obviously but I've not seen the two put together. I'd never be able to push it either.

I don't think it would be easy or relaxing!! This type of mower is hard to push through lawn or grass.

@youless If the grass is short it might be okay. I think the bike is just meant as a joke.

I imagine it would be very difficult though to push. It's hard enough pushing this type of mower if you're walking. I think it would be even harder trying to pedal but at least you'd build up good leg muscles! lol

@JudyEv I think it would depend on your ground. I know the old push mowers like that are hard to push on uneven ground. But not bad at all on level ground

That's interesting that you've seen them before. I should think they'd be iincredibly hard to operate.

@JudyEv My lot is maybe odd. I have put in quite a few gardens now but where there is lawn, be very careful. For whatever reason, the ground is uneven though flat. I bring my cane when I walk off the walks. There are little hillocks and bumpy ground in unexpected places.

@sallypup I guess it wasn't smoothed out before being planted. I can imagine you'd need to be very careful walking there as the unevenness wouldn't be apparent.
