Happy Independence Day, America! Hey, and England? No hard feelings.
Yes, we’re officially 249 years old today. And, since it’s July, it’s sunny and hot here. That calls for another song with “sun” (or some variant) in the title. Here’s one you all probably remember.
California Sun - The Rivieras
If you’d like to play “six degrees of country music,” this song was written by Henry Glover, who co-wrote one of my all-time favorite country songs, “Blues, Stay Away From Me.” Don’t worry, though, we aren’t playing “six degrees of country music.”
This is one of those songs that combined the surf guitar and fun, simple lyrics for a good time. It’s quite the memorable song, too: not only did The Rivieras’ version make the top five in 1964, the Ramones turned it into one of their signature songs after recording it in 1977. And, you can hear it in Good Morning, Vietnam (Rivieras) or Jackass: The Movie (Ramones).
And probably all summer long on classic 60s stations!
California Sun
Written by Henry Glover
Recorded by The Rivieras
From Let’s Have a Party, 1964
They’re out there having fun:

No hard feelings!
Happy 4th of July. How does it feel to be 249 years old?
I don’t ever recall hearing this song or know The Rivieras. I’ve got quite a few songs with “sun” in the title in my head. I’ll keep them under my hat until the end of the month, if you haven’t mentioned them.
Keep ‘em coming!

That was the biggest hit version of the song, but it had been released before this rendition.
Glad we’re all friends now. Heck, I even posed with the king today!

@FourWalls I wish I had noise-cancelling headphones last night. Somebody shot a rocked into my storm window... I'm lucky it didn't shatter!

They were a one hit wonder. It’s understandable that you wouldn’t remember them.

The “British Isles” have been called that for over 2,000 years. We have a lot of catching up to do.

You’ve been around radio stations that played it?

@FourWalls Actually, this one did get a fair amount of radio airplay at one time. Less now these days. But in the 80s and maybe even into the 90s? Sure.

Thank you. That guitar sound became synonymous with beach music.
