Wrong Delivery From the Pharmacy

I was given 4 prescription at the doctor's office yesterday. One was for my right eye that has been swollen and not wanting to open for over a week, one was a stronger pain med for the sciatica, one was another med to help with sciatica and one was for a renewal for the test strips for diabetic testing. The other pharmacy hasn't been sending those test strips lately. The new pharmacy brought everything a little while ago but the test strips were wrong. I called and the pharmacist talked with me and said that my insurance wasn't paying for the brand of test strips I'd been getting so the they switched me to another brand. The new brand doesn't fit my testing equipment... The pharmacist said they'd bring a new machine over later this afternoon. We'll be all good when that happens.

My wife had a problem like this. They shipped the wrong test strips. We called and they said they would ship the right ones, in the meantime, we purchased the correct strips at the pharmacy. We only bought the smallest package because the correct strips were on the way. When the strips arrived, they were the same wrong strips. I noticed charges for both wrong orders on my card. It took several attempts to fix the mess. I eventually got the refund and a mailing label to return the two wrong orders. Since then we have switched to the monitor and don't use strips anymore. With the monitor, you can read your blood sugar at any time using the small device connected by Bluetooth. Insurance paid 100%. I hope you get the new reader this afternoon. I wonder why insurance can get away with not covering such a necessary item?

@DaddyEvil I was about to complain about the 30 day supply limit too. I guess they are hoping their customers die before they have to renew, they could save the money a 90 day supply costs them. I was just denied a pain medication from my carrier for unspecified reasons. I had been waiting all week for the pre authorization required. My doctor submitted a different one. I wonder how long I'll have to wait to see if they approve it. I'm beginning to understand why Healthcare CEO's get shot.

@Vikingswest1 I wonder if there's a black market for all the meds we normally get and that's why insurance will only pay for 30 days at a time? (I bet you're right about them hoping their customers die so save money buying 30 day supplies.) And yes, I can easily see that being the reason for them getting shot, too. I don't have any I'd be willing to sell on but I'm sure a lot of people would if they needed the money badly enough.

I don't know, either... Or why the insurance won't pay for a 90 day supply even though it's cheaper to buy 90 days at a time. Our pharmacy is forced to bill the insurance at the higher cost for a 30 day supply instead. Wow! I'm glad they refunded you the money... I'd have been pissed about getting the wrong strips two times!

Everyone understood the problem and they were willing to solve it. That's good customer service.

Yes, it is... I just wish they had told us that the insurance wouldn't pay for the test strips before changing us over. It wouldn't have made a difference but I wouldn't have been concerned and called that way. (I did confirm the prescriptions yesterday when the doctor called them in. I specifically asked if the insurance would pay for all of them.)

@DaddyEvil Yes they erred there. They should have called and informed you about the situation . Explain why it was changed.

It's good that they will make that change. I am having mine mailed to me now with my new insurance and they give me a 90 day supply on each of three I get. Now why in the world do they insist on sending them monthly when I have enough for 3 months? I just do not get it.

@DaddyEvil ......How idiotic. It all sounds like a scam to me. The insurance and the pharmacy. Out to make money any way they can and to heck with the patient.

I don't know, either... My doctor keeps ordering a 90 day supply but the insurance won't pay for that, even though it's cheaper to buy them that way... The pharmacy has to charge for 30 day supplies at the higher cost.

@GardenGerty I have no idea... I've never priced them when we were at Walmart. My doctor told Pretty to test me twice a day for the next month and let her see the log of tests... Pretty worries that taking that many tests will damage my left thumb so looked up how to test in other areas... Apparently, you can test all up and down your arm if the chosen finger/thumb starts getting sore. (I haven't had a problem with it yet.. I always jab the same thumb near the thumbnail so it won't bother me typing. I don't use my left thumb typing, anyway.)

That's great that you have medics willing to figure out things when there is an issue. Sciatica is such a horror. I've been coping with it for way too long.

@DaddyEvil I've dealt with sciatica for donkey's years. At one point I thought I was smart. I very gradually and gently used a treadmill cause I knew I needed the exercise. A month of that and I ended up in the physical therapists so I could walk again. I recommend gentle presses of the knee to the stomach while you are lying on your bed. You can do this standing up but for me its best when I am lying down.

@sallypup I was doing some of the exercises recommended for sciatica but either overdid them a few days ago or did something wrong. My sciatic nerve screams at me now for just walking where before it was just once in a while when I made a wrong move or turned while on my left foot/leg.

@DaddyEvil I'm sorry for your pain. One of the embarrassing looking exercises that the therapist did was stretching my leg. Sure didn't look great, I'm sure, but eventually I was walking again.

It would be great if they could replace your machine to match your strips. But I believe the pharmacy should have informed you that they would be changing the strips and replaced the machine altogether. But that's okay because it'll be replaced anyway.

Darn insurance. Well I'm glad the new pharmacy is helping you to get what you need. Hope the meds take care of your eye and sciatica. Oy, Hubby is having sciatica issues right now (it flares up every now and then). The other day he was in line . . . standing from 7:30am - 3pm . . . and you know being in 1 position for too long can start it. Thank goodness when there is finally relief from that pain!

At least is all got sorted out in the end. I'm sorry your hubby is having that kind of pain, too. I was in cooking at the stove a while ago and almost couldn't stay standing long enough to turn off the burner and move the pan... Pretty helped me back to bed and then finished the cooking. (I was surprised she finished it. She won't eat any of it.) I hope your hubby gets some good pain meds for his, too.

I am glad that the pharmacy can give you a new machine. We now have this problem here in Europe, the insurance companies only want to pay for "non brand" medications.

@DaddyEvil - I am perfectly fine with non-branded meds, but I noticed how much the big pharma are boycotting them. The medication my husband needs is no more available as "non branded", I had to pay last time.

I don't mind non-brand medications as they're usually the same meds but cheaper to produce. They don't have big pharmaceutical companies pushing them at doctors. Real people can afford the non-branded meds, usually.

It would be cheaper to get the right test strips. It boggles my mind how some insurances decide on what they will cover. I had a temp medication that was much cheaper, safer and would help denied but, a procedure was offered at 10X the cost.

It's cheaper to buy 90 day supplies, too, but the insurance refuses to pay for them. They insist on paying the higher 30 day at a time costs for the diabetic supplies. I wonder if the insurance calculates that a lot fewer people will opt for the surgery so they're saving money by denying the medication? I wouldn't doubt it.

@noni1959 Medicaid insists they be the last insurance billed so they don't have to pay much for most people. We can't get my meds shipped since two of my prescriptions have to be refrigerated. If Medicare changed something for one person, they'd have to change it for everyone and not everyone can pay for meds. You're lucky you can afford them yourself.

@DaddyEvil My regular insurance I did a cobra with and keeping, would send me three bottles at a time. Medicare is insisting they are the first insurance to be billed now and they only send one a month. Shipping is higher since it's UPS every month. My insurance will still cover it. You would think they would allow it. I didn't want Medicare yet but at age 65, I was mandated since I was on disability. That is an insurance that is in need of cutting cost and yet, still insisted even though I didn't need it.

It's good they're bringing in a new machine. I consumed my strips two weeks ago and didn't purchase one as there's a testing center in the mall where I used to go. I hope sugar levels will be manageable.

My sugar level was 101 yesterday when we got the new machine. For a diabetic, that's an acceptable level. Pretty and I were both happy with that. I hope your levels are also good.

Sorry to hear about the mix up with your test strips but glad they have provided you with a new machine. I am sorry to hear about your sciatica. 4 weeks ago l coughed & popped a disc with instant bilateral sciatica. Once you have had it before you know what it is. As it happened at the weekend l waited till Monday to phone the doctor. She said you need to come so l can examine you. I said you clearly did not hear I cannot stand up. She said drive here by car. How do you suggest l do that I just told you l cannot stand! I hope your pain soon resolves!

I hope you're doing much better now. It's always good to see you on myLot. That sounds just like my doctor telling me to get to her office immediately... I'm sure you never gave patients orders like that. Thanks... It's a new-to-me pharmacy. We just switched to them after the Walmart pharmacy wouldn't deliver my meds and I couldn't get them for two weeks. (I have Graves' Disease and my eyes are swelled almost closed 90% of the time. My daughter can't drive...)
