So, I was picking up a few items at the local Food Lion, I am making Fajitas so I looked to see how much some flank or similar steak was. I wish I hadin't there was nothing under 11.00 and most of it was more than that. What the heck? I ended up getting Steakums. These freaking prices for red meat are ridiculous. What has shocked you lately in terms of prices?

I think that inflation had contributed to that

That is good news. My electric bill is not super high despite running it quite a bit.

I've wondered how families are eating these days when they eat meat. When daughter was young we had very little income. We had brown rice for supper with maybe a quarter pound of turkey burger for us 3 and vegies. Back then we were able to find turkey burger at a fairly decent price. We ate a ton of turkey ham cause it was cheaper. These days I don't know what people do. I know that tofu is still reasonably priced and has tons of protein etc but many people would prefer to not know about tofu.

Just about everything is nuts in price these days except for stuff like Costco chickens or fish bought at a discounter.

There are lots of foods that grow wild. I remember mom going out and snipping off leaves (pads) of prickly pear cactus. Dad would start a fire in the yard and put the pads in the fire long enough to burn off the spines, then mom would gently slice all the way around the pad and peel the outer layer off and throw it away. Then she'd cook a small amount of meat (it didn't matter what kind of meat) and put those pads in the pan with them until the pads were cooked. They tasted JUST like whatever kind of meat they were cooked with so we had "meat" and veggies in one... It was really good!
We also went to our ponds and pulled up some of the cattails growing in the pond. Mom would peel the roots and the stems and cook those in a frying pan. They're really good, too.
In the spring, mom would collect cattail pollen and use it just like flour to make bread and biscuits.
You just have to know what's edible, where to find it and how to prepare it.
Edit to add: Mom and dad made sure we knew what was edible and how to prepare it, just in case we ever needed to know.

@DaddyEvil You had fantastic parents and a fantastic upbringing. My main foraging gig when I was a kid was gathering morel mushrooms. In adulthood we gathered-carefully- nettles and boiled them up like spinach.

The price of everything has gone up by a ridiculous amount. I have noticed that along with meat, coffee has also shot up in price …and also bread, which used to be a cheap foodstuff.

@snowy22315 that’s very true…..buying in bulk and batch cooking for the freezer is a great way of making your money go further …sadly not everyone can do that.

Our red meat prices are off the charts expensive here. The only place I have found good ground beef here even in the $5 per pound range is Aldi. I don't buy any other cuts of red meat, and haven't for quite some time. Like you, I scrounge for sales, too.
Coffee is way, way up. Many dairy products, such as butter, sour cream, cottage cheese, and regular hard cheeses are way up, too.

Horrible! The only deals to be had are stores like Aldi and Lidl (available on the East Coast Mainstream grocers forget it...this in including Walmart who's prices are absurd! We do have an IGA here that has decent prices.

@MarieCoyle Yeah, they are known for their meat. I don't shop there too often though. It is a bit out of the way

Our IGA stores in this area have been bought out by other chains over the years--I can only think of one still open, and it's over 100 miles away. But that store is wildly expensive compared to others. I'm glad you still have one with decent prices.

Maga says, best economy ever, should I believe them, much better than Biden. I am not trying to make it political or divided but what do you call it when people lie to your face and go you not only seeing it wrong but being all dramatic about it.
Remember do not trust your eyes, fine everything looks like its 99 cents to me.

The prices in the grocery store have gotten ridiculous. I agree that the price of red meat (steak) has gone through the roof. Usually I buy my meat at Sams Club and then break it all down into small portions. It's still cheaper than the supermarket but not by much these days.

Surprisingly l have been shocked by the prices for fish in the butcheries in my country. The prices for close to that of the beef nowadays.

Soft drinks in a restaurant are $3.99 now. Ridiculous! Oh, and vitamins I thought were expensive.

Vitamins have about doubled in price. Luckily I have some left that were priced reasonably. Coffee is another thing. I got some that wasn't frequiously expensive. Also, soft drinks are super overpriced to begin with.
