Shock at the Supermarket.

I know groceries are getting more expensive but yesterday l was absolutely horrified. A visit to the supermarket yesterday was a nightmare. Friday being a very busy shopping day my daughter picked me up & took me to one of the UK's cheaper supermarkets. The prices are far higher than where l usually shop which is one of the UK's leading supermarkets. Prices seemed to be at least 20- 30% more expensive for certain things. Once we had completed our shop we patiently waited in the queue to pay at one of the 4 open tills despite there being 10 tills. Lots of people with baskets were checking out at self service tills. Trust me to pick the wrong till. Every single transaction the guy had to call the supervisor. The lady in front of me kept rolling her eyes & sighing. I was becoming slightly impatient. It seemed that the system would not accept phone payments or tap & go. So the supervisor had to sort that out for them to pay. The lady infront turned to me rolling her eyes again & said thank God l have my card to pay. Her shopping went through ok she smiled winked & said good bye. My turn the half trolley of fresh fruit & vegetables went through quickly as l struggled to pack everything in my 2 shopping bags. When l stopped packing & turned to pay l gasped & said good grief. The price shocked the life out of me. £116 ($154.06) The man called the supervisor he had charged me for 51times for a double pack of mangoes. I tod him I would be sitting on the toilet for a month if I ate 102 mangoes. He adjusted the price which suddenly dropped the price to a more realistic £59 ($66.40). That was more like it. I put my card in the payment machine. Payment refused. I took the card out & shoved it in again firmly this time it was accepted. Once l got home l checked the receipt he had removed all the 51 mangoes. So I got the mangoes free! Has this ever happened to you?

Pretty watches the prices charged for our groceries and I just stick the card in the machine and watch money disappear. I know better than to look at the amount the supermarket takes from us. Once in a while, Pretty waves her magic phone at the register and we get nice discounts on some grocery items. That's always nice!

@garymarsh6 I'm sorry that happened... Pretty forgot her phone once but took my phone while the cashier was ringing up our groceries and put the apps on it and still saved us money.

I did it with diabetic test strips once. Scanned it twice and it is something that cannot be returned so therefore could not be cancelled. The customer service person "helped me" and we rang up 23 total packages of 100 test strips. . . . that could not be returned. He had to send for help to someone who did have the magical powers to make everything alright. You would have had a hard time eating all those mangoes before the went bad.

Good thinking but when I do self check out it takes me far longer as l end up calling the assistant. Sometimes after the umpteenth call they do it all for me I think they do it because they must think l am seriously incomptent!

@jstory07 You are the best! I would always head to your till. I much prefer to go to the person operated tills as l usually chat to them & have a few laughs with them. They rarely make mistakes & the ladies are very friendly. Not only that they are faster. The younger cashiers less chatty & they look like they would rather be elsewhere.

You surely choose the wrong line Gary. It happened to me, someone in front of us used the "Auto-Scan" she presented the item at the cashier, the system asked to re-scan again every item. She had bought for 321 € of goods. I was furious.

@garymarsh6 I usually go shopping on Tuesday or Friday and I avoid those who use the self-scan because often the system asks the cashier to scan again. I never use it for this reason. We always go early in the morning.

How frustrating for you I would be annoyed too. Friday is the worst day for shopping here & I never go shopping at the weekend. We usually go much earlier in the week usually Tuesday or Wednesday when most people are at work & kids are at school. When I was working l always went very early Saturday morning often before my wife got up. There were less people in the shops early morning & I was quicker when she is not with me. I go in know what I need get it & out again whereas my wife is dreadful & is all over the place.

Wow! - Just three mangoes a day - even less depending on the size - and you would be going to the bathroom regular. He charged you for 102 mangoes - what was he thinking?. Good that you were alert and noticed the error. I don 't suppose you will be shopping there again.

No I noticed it immediately in the supermarket. He removed the mangoes & never added the pair l had bought so they ended up as free.

The waiting for payment was torture for you!The level of expertise of the guy at the tills and the supervisor is hardly commendable !

I order my groceries online so I know what I have to pay and what to expect unless there are substitutions and then I have to be sure they do not make the substitution more expensive than what I was going to order, Of course, there is also delivery to pay for but I am used to that,

"Just rewards" for going through the hassle. I recall an occasion where someone had placed a few items in my trolly. I became more observant after that.

I am intrigued now …..which supermarket was it ? I always check the receipt and will go back if necessary. Last week in Morrisons I had two packs of cheese as it was £2.69 each or 2 for £4.50. I checked and it wasn’t sold at the offer price , I had been charged full price for both. I went to customer service and after about five minutes she gave me the difference back. I checked and it was a G&S offer ….i asked two members of staff but neither knew what G&S was. I don’t care…..I bought two more packs of cheese ….and the difference came off. Yay !

Yes, it happens to me once, but I really give patience 'cause we're humans. Maybe we 'cause sometime a mistake. I think reason also is the sign of our ages, we forgot or maybe there is time that our kindness is abusing. The circumstances sometimes brings us an error.
