Do you make your own pasta ?

Just been watching a television programme called ‘ Come dine with me ‘. Five strangers get together over five evenings and they each take turns to cook for everyone. They have to cook a starter, main and dessert. At the end of each evening they score the host out of ten. One of the ‘cooks’ in this programme had a family that came from Italy, and so he wanted to cook a ‘ proper ‘ Italian meal. This of course included pasta. Bless him, he did try to make his own pasta and even called in his father to help. Unfortunately, things did not go to plan. He ended up cooking shop bought pasta. He was questioned about this, and marked down. Got me wondering. Do you make your own pasta ? I don’t. I don’t think that there is anything wrong with shop bought.

@traceyjayne Sometimes I do but shop bought dried stuff is not only easier and less mess - its cheaper. It’s one culinary trick I’d love to master though.

@Traceyjayne I’d love to make perfect ravioli. I’d stuff it with ricotta, spinach and nutmeg. I had excellent ravioli in Hungary once stuffed with venison and served in a pigeon broth.

@xFiacre if miss on the nutmeg ….but the other ingredients are a winner from me. I would have loved to try the Hungarian ravioli …sounds delicious

I wouldn’t mind having a go at making it ….but I think I will stick with the dried packet stuff. We did bring some dried packet pasta back from Italy and we honestly couldn’t tell any difference between that and our regular UK brand.

No, nothing wrong with shop bought. I used to make my own egg noodles. I don't make any myself anymore.

No, I had a pasta maker one time. I chucked it. I only used it once or twice and it was taking up space. I don't find homemade pasta in a machine to be better than regular, but homemade noodles without a machine, like in a soup or something are delicious.

I did think of getting one a few years ago …someone was going to buy me one, but I decided I wouldn’t use it enough.

I can and do sometimes. My family always makes homemade ravioli for Christmas dinner. I just made homemade ravioli and fettuccine a few days ago. It isn't hard. Most of the time though I just use store bought dried pasta.

The guy on tv was in a real mess with it. I have had fresh pasta sometimes but I actually prefer the dried. Your ravioli sounds delicious though.

I wouldn’t even know how to go about making it, and I kind of feel badly for that guy who tried so hard, and failed.

Yes, I often make my own pasta, I learnt from my grandmother when I was still very young. I buy dry pasta, but I like a lot more to make my egg pasta (lasagna noodles, fettuccine, tagliatelle and so on).

As much as I love pasta I've never attempted to make my own. It looks easy when they make it on tv though

@Traceyjayne I'm sure it tastes better than what you buy but it's just easier to use the dried stuff. Plus it's cheaper too

Years ago I had one of those pasta machines you 'mangle' your pasta with. It never got used and in the end I gave it away. Then a couple of years later we went on holiday to Rome and my partner came back enthused about pasta making, so I acquired another one. It' been used about three times in 20 years or so! So no, we hardly ever make pasta from scratch. Dried stuff is just fine, or you can easily get the fresh pasta nowadays too. But we have tried to make some more unusual things such as beetroot ravioli and ginger linguine.

I didn’t get one as I knew I wasn’t going to use it much. I like dried pasta. I have had fresh but honestly I prefer the dried.
