Reading a post from @1creekgirl reminded me of when I got my first car. My dad told me if I got straight A’s through school he’d get me my own car (not new, of course). So in 1997, my dad got me a 1989 Chevy Silverado. I remember it was a light green, and really outdated on the inside (no cassette player - it was cassette back then). I didn’t really care TOO much how current it was, but my dad said I had a choice . He’d give me the truck how it was, and $1,000, or he’d use that $1,000 to fix up the truck. I told him to use the $1,000 to fix up the Silverado. Oh, it was so pretty. I remember the men at church being jealous. New seats, cassette player, a deep, dark green for the paint job - it was gorgeous. (I didn’t ask for a particular vehicle; I said I didn’t have a preference) My sister’s choice was a red Geo Storm. Anyone remember those cars? Tiny cars, not made for sticking your 5’11 sister in the back in a 3 hour trip! (she’s 5’6) Anyway, I just remember how proud my dad was to get such a good deal, and to fix something up so nice for me. What was your first vehicle, for those who drive?

LOL--afraid I never had one--aside from a pedal car (or maybe it didn't have pedals, but...) that my Dad's boss gave to my brother and I when we were kids.

@AmbiePam I can still see it in my head. It was a kind of silver colored metal--aluminum, I guess--and I seem to recall it had numbers on the side like a race car.

I had a 69 Chevy Nova which I bought myself. It was only about 10 years old at that time. My parents teased me with a Datsun for Christmas when I was a Senior, but when I graduated I ended up with a watch.. Oh well, they bought what they could afford.

Aw, snowy. I don’t like that you were teased. I’m sure you appreciated the watch though.

Being the only daughter out of a family of 4 children, I was privileged to have my parents insist that I drive either of their vehicles as long as I lived at home. And I didn't get married until I was 25 years old, so potentially that could have been alot of 'borrowing' of their vehicle. And living on a farm, my Dad insisted that I just pull the vehicle up to the pump and park it there so that either he or one of my brothers could pump the gas into it-he literally refused to show me how to pump the gas. This was about the time we were starting to see self serve stations. But a couple of years before I got married, my sweet Gramma passed away. She had a Chevy Malibu, it was a dark blue one. I liked that car, mostly because she choose it and I loved her so. When she passed away, I waited for the dust to settle, and eventually when they decided to have an auction sale for her household furniture and things, I asked about her car. My Dad told me that if I were interested in buying it, he would get a quote from the dealership, which he did, and I paid that amount to him, which he put into the estate. It had a lousy AM only radio, but my husband switched that up to an AM/FM with a tape deck in it. But the problem was the electronics in the car did not allow for great reception, and often, if you were in an area near the lake, you either popped in a cassette, or you sang. We used to sing alot. We sang songs from television programs, the Beverly Hillbillies, Gillian's Island, the Brady Bunch, you get the idea. I drove that car until I was in my early 20's, so almost 10 years.

@Fleura Thank you, we tried to have fun and enjoy what we had, even though it wasn't the newest or the best. The car went on to become a stock car. A niece married a guy who raced at the local stock car raceway, and he really wanted it, so we gave it to him, so that he could modify it and race it.

My first car was my brother's Corvair. Much better than driving around my mom's station wagon. Fun fact: I took my driver's test on that car and did the parallel parking perfectly. Of course, I had a lot of practice beforehand, lol. I liked the car. It was small in size, it felt like driving one of those bumper cars and I attached a goofy foot over the pedal. A popular novelty item back then.

I like the creativity! My dad taught me, and about three of my friends how to parallel park. My mom taught me to drive, and my friend’s parents taught them how to drive, but when it came to parallel parking, people came to my dad!

I did not get my license until after I married the first time. We did not have a car for me to drive or to pass the safety inspection in. So, Larry, my high school sweetheart, came home on leave from the Navy to get married and take me to California. He went down to pick out a car, and got a pretty new Chevy Impala Station Wagon. Being a young guy, he had always said station wagons were old people cars, but you know what? After buying that one, we always either had a station wagon or a van or both. We could and did haul a lot of stuff in it. Even a full sized mattress and box springs.

@AmbiePam I lived in Milan (Italy), a car is useless there, you walk or you use the public transport to move in the city. My parents had a car, that they kept in the garage and used during the weekends for short trips.

I was 21 and I had moved away from home. I bought a used Plymouth Valiant. Those cars in their day could go for 200,000 miles without a problem. They don't make cars like that anymore. I tried driving to work just one day. Driving downtown was horrific. I went back to riding the bus.

Well, you know that I don’t drive, but my husband and I got our first car together when we got married. It was green and a 1981 Ford LTD. My parents gave it to us. It was 8 years old, but a great car. We still miss it.

The first car I got was an old clunker from my dad. I was pregnant with my 1st child and my dad felt bad that we were taking public transportation everywhere. That car lasted us for quite awhile (if I remember correctly).
