Too much of a good thing

A comment was made recently about visiting nursing homes and also about providing entertainment for the residents. I know several people who regularly play the piano and/or lead the residents in singing the beloved old songs and hymns that they still remember. I remember talking to a group of brass-players once who were visiting such centres around Christmas time to play carols. At one centre, the residents were being brought into the room. One old man was wheeled in in a wheelchair, took one look at the band and said loudly, ‘Not more bl**dy carols!’ I guess he had had too much of a good thing. When Vince and I played in brass bands, I used to get tired of play carols as we’d visit a lot of towns/associations around Christmas time and play carols. The photo is mine and was taken in a shop which only has Christmas merchandise.

Is "bloody"a bad word? I had one 80-year-old lady give me "the finger"when I made a cleaver quip in her general direction.

I can't believe some sweet, old lady would do that to you...

You wouldn't have seen that in previous generations but standards slipped a while back and now all the oldies know all the rude words and signs and many have tattoos as well. You'd never have seen a tattoo in a nursing home once.

I suppose anything overdone no matter how good it may be one tends to gets tired of it But if there is one thing I am not tired of and that is chocolates

It was probably the 3rd or 4th group that had visited and they'd all do much the same carols.

It's pretty funny. Poor old man. He probably had no choice about what he did in his day. Just had to put up with it all. But the poor group might have been a bit devastated.

It is too bad that the wheelchair pusher didn't listen when the resident told them the same thing, and tried to help find him something else to do that particular day. Cute picture.

Yes, it would have been nice if they could have found something else for him.

I can totally understand the man's attitude, and yours. I get tired of hearing Christmas music really fast... With stores playing Christmas music for months before Christmas, is it any wonder I'm burned out on the holidays before they even get here?

If you've been hearing a lot of anything, then you would get pretty tired of it.

When I was social services in a nursing home we had a certain night of the week that carolers came, but I had to work those nights due to the disturbance of some of our dementia patients.

Where I worked, although I wasn't involved in the day to day running of the dementia wing, the carollers came during the day.

That's for sure and at Christmas there does seem to be a lot of carols played here, there and everywhere.

@JudyEv I even hate to go shopping during Christmas time because of the too many Christmas musics in the stores. After a while it's too much.

I guess the thinking is that the older people like all the old carols but they'd probably like a little variety too.

Lol. I know a few elderly people who probably would have said the same ! On the whole I think they like people going in to entertain them .....you just get the occasional ' character '.

Well, he didn't have to listen! He could have asked someone to wheel him out! It's a good thing that these groups are doing for the residents.

Fair enough. I have to admit I got fed up with playing umpteen verses of the same carols over and over again. Sometimes our band might go to ten different places in the weeks before Christmas.
