This time of the year there is usually an abundance of Apples as we come to the end of summer. Apple pies were invented in England in the 14th Century & various European countries had their own variations of Apple pies. In France Tarte aux pommes, Tarte Tatin, The Dutch had their appeltaarten, The Austrians/German apfelstrudel. The basic recipe included chopped apples or stewed & pureed, sweetened with honey or sugar in a pastry filled casing. The pies can include cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, sultanas, other fruits like Black berries, black currents & other soft fruits. It can be open topped, latticed, have a crumble top, made in individual portions or a large pie to feed the whole family. Our favourite is apple & blackberry & at the moment there are some nice ripe blackberries ready to pick. Usually served hot with custard, cream or ice cream. It can be eaten hot or cold. Apples originated in Asia then spred along the silk route to the Middle East & Europe. As Europeans emigrated to the USA they introduce apples there. Do you like apple pie? Have you ever made your own? The photo is not mine!

Yes, I like apple pie! Mom used to make huge apple pies and apple crumbles. When I was younger, I baked apple pies, too. But I buy the small, individual ones once in a great while now. Pretty won't eat fruit pies and I don't eat them fast enough to buy a full-sized pie. I also like cherry and blueberry pies, too.

@garymarsh6 Oh, I see... We buy both fruits here in season and they're not too expensive. I don't make pies with them, though. I eat them fresh. (I could make pies but Pretty won't help me eat fruit pies and that would be too much sugar for just me.)

@DaddyEvil Thats the only draw back when one will eat but the other won't especially on the sugar front.

Cherry & Blueberry pies sound nice. Both are very expensive fruits in the UK.

I like apple pie, it is not my favorite, but is my husband's favorite. My mother's family immigrated from Belgium and had their own recipes for apple pie as well as other apple desserts. My Dad's family began farming here almost 200 years ago, and they had a nice little orchard on the farm with a variety of apples. There was never a shortage of apple pies and desserts growing up on the farm.

How lucky you were. We had an apple tree & pear tree in our garden so there was a plentiful supply. We currently only have a cherry tree that produces lovely sweet dark cherries.

@garymarsh6 We had a pear tree as well as an apricot tree. My mother even learned to make jelly from the fruit on the crab apple tree.

@garymarsh6 I also like it with flakey pastrie. I remember how good it was the apfelstrudel that our hotel in the Dolomite served in the morning.

We have a huge apple tree in our garden. We have already given lots to family and friends. This week I'm at the caravan and I have picked loads of blackberries growing wild. I'm going to be busy making cakes and crumbles.

I am not too fond of a plain apple pie, but I do like the ones that have streusel topping. My favorite dessert is apple crisp.

@garymarsh6 Is the Pope Catholic? Of course I love apple pie - made in all the ways t ways that you have outlined. I’d give a lot to Be eating a properly constructed Tarte Tatin in “Chez Ma Belle Mère” in Paris tonight. Preceded by a steak cooked au point, paired with a nice French Merlot from Cahors and then on to a bar on Place Contrescarpe for a generous cognac.

I'll start by saying I LOVE apple pie and yes I've made my own. My favorite is with a crumble topping but I've never turned down an apple pie regardless of the topping/crust. Apples are so versatile that I've baked apples instead of a whole pie and they do hit the spot.

My mother used to make the best apple pie! I haven't managed to achieve the same yet. I always laugh at the American saying 'As American as apple pie'. That's not American at all then.

God, I’m definitely a fan of apple pie! I’ve made my own a few times, usually with a crumble top because I love the crunchy texture. Apple and blackberry sounds like a killer combo, especially with some vanilla ice cream. How about u, do u prefer making classic apple pie or trying out different fruit mixes?
