Good morning, friends. I am eating a piece of cake, had my pills very late with a cup of coffee and went to turn the toilette at noon for the first time. All this was a first, mainly in winter. But what happened was that I fell asleep with the heater on and lights and TV on. The bedroom was so cozy that I slept for hours. All of you who have central heating maybe don´t understand this. But I don´t and if winter is too cold I am cold inside the house in spite of the gas heater. I have to turn it off at night for the fumes. Last night was the coldest night of the year. One of my friends took a picture of the Andes mountains, snowed all the way down. He sent it to me. Beautiful, but the snow is only blocks away from my home. So I thought that I would turn the heater off later. And later meant never. And the cold night was wonderful for me. This morning (or should I say noon?) I turned the heater off. I will turn it on again when the house is not so warm. Do you spend a lot in heating the house in winter? I´m retired and I dread the heater bills in winter. See you around .

Cake for breakfast, sounds sinfully good! I am glad you had such a warm night since it was the coldest night of the year there. Do we spend a lot on heat? My home is small. Electric rates here have been climbing higher pretty much constantly since the spring. I have cut back every way I know how...winter is coming and of course the heat will be on. I can tell you that I don't keep it nearly as warm as I like. We have electric blankets and they don't use much power at all, so at night we can snuggle under them. We have plenty of other warm blankets. On cold days I wear long sleeves, and warm clothing. If it's warranted, I will wear a heavy cardigan sweater or a hoodie in the house to keep from turning up the heat very much. If it saves money, I am going to do that. It's very hard to have to heat a large home when the temperatures really dive. Here, you would have to be careful if you shut off part of your home, as the pipes can freeze in rooms that have no heat, if pipes run in the walls in those rooms. It's always something....either so hot you can't hardly stand it, or so cold you are under blankets. I love the fall and spring,, moderate temps are wonderful.

I don´t have pipes in my house as I don´t have central heating. So I just heat my bedroom and bathroom. The heat warms part of the dining room and the kitchen. The rests is very cold but I don´t go there. I prefer to spend money in heating this part of the house than to end up with a cold and spend that money in doctors and meds.

@MarieCoyle We don´t have winters that cold. That´s why we don´t have central heating. Central heating is a luxury in my city.

@marguicha Marga, I meant your water pipes....if you have bathrooms and a kitchen, and of course I know that you do, you have water pipes that run through your walls as well as a sewer/drain line, etc. If a house is too cold for a long while and the temperature outside is too cold, those pipes can freeze and burst. It's very costly as it causes a lot of damage to the home, usually water everywhere, etc.

I'm glad you had a cozy night, even if you weren't planning on the heater staying on all night. I hope you're feeling okay today. Since I'm retired, I get government help heating our house during the winter. They give my gas company $400 toward our gas bill and that usually covers our bills for around four months. Then we start paying for it again. We get the same kind of help with the electric bill during the summer.

I am not poor enough to get help from the government except for my knee pills.

I know exactly how you feel in your house, since this old house has no insulation and no central heat. It's cold and drafty.

Nice to sleep warm and comfy. Is the heater safe to leave on? That's rather scary. We will probably spend about the same in heating as we did last year. Weird thing is that our level pay (we pay the same each month) actually went down from $111 to $86. I think that is weird. It usually goes up.

The Alps are not far, winters are cold and we spent a lot of money to heat the large house in Switzerland. Here it's not very expensive, we have solar panels on the roof and the apartments are so well insulated.

@marguicha - I was concerned at first, I feared I was going to miss our large house, but NO. We are so well here and with so very little to do.

Not so much no. I rarely turn on the central heat and make do with space heaters. I really would super like to replace my electric fake woodburner though. That could really heat up a room.

We use Hot Air Blower in our House during the peak winters in December & January. However, the bills then are still lower than what I incur during April to September when we have to run Air Conditioners day in and day out. May be you have temperatures below freezing? We have peak winters with max that fall to 12 to 15 C and Min of 3 to 5 C on an average. There are some years when the lower side dips below 2 C. Yes, letting the heater remain running all night can be dangerous. May be you can leave a bit of your door open. Are you allowed to have Pills with Coffee? Some Pills here are meant to be taken with Milk but most are recommended with water. Anyways, enjoy your Sunday. Best of wishes for health & recovery. By the way, you might, in the recent future hear about some sort of a trade deal between India and Chile!

My apartment has no central anything, I keep the workroom cool in the heat we have with the AC and fan on all the time, A stand up fan cools me off at night and when it gets cold here I have a small space heater

Hello, greetings, I live in a very tropical area, considered the hottest in Venezuela. Seeing your fear about the heating bill makes me question how different the worlds are even though we live in Latin America, because I am afraid of the bills for the constant use of air conditioning. ??
