I like the monthly tradition.

My dad and his wife drove two hours today to have lunch with his 10 living siblings (he’s 15th of 16 kids). Once a month they all meet for lunch. He’s the only one that doesn’t live in the Tulsa are, so he doesn’t come every month. A few of the others also are not yet retired so they still have jobs too.
I’m glad he does this. The majority of his family, although they moved away from where they grew up, did end up living within an hour of each other except for two (one moved to California (now deceased) and one to Arkansas). Now, all but my dad are there. I’d love for him to retire there, and I think he would too.
Would you like to live closer to family, or maybe further apart? I’d love to be closer to my nieces and nephew. They live about 2 1/2 hours from here. It would take a lot to get me to move. It’s not as simple as just moving when you live on Section 8. Plus, I’ve seen Section 8 there, and it might be worse than where I am now. I can’t function somewhere that is worse than this, right now.
Anyway, back to the subject…

I, also, am the 15th out of 16 kids. Unfortunately, there are only 4 of us left now. The brother 4 years older than me still lives here in Aurora, too. Our youngest sister lives 12 miles away and the oldest brother is around 30 miles away. I talk with the brother just older than me and ignore the other two.
We used to have huge family reunions once a year and a smaller family reunion just for brothers and sisters once a year. I stopped going to those when I was in my 30s.

@AmbiePam Whenever he shows up, we visit or I drive over and talk with him at his house. He's only a few blocks away.

I would like to be closer for sure. It's too far to go up there often.I have looked into it a bit .not impressed with the possibilities. Ideally, I would like a summer place up there.

@AmbiePam Not so much, but I don't have the disposable income at this point.

My brother is still pastoring in Guthrie. We visit some, mostly us going there. We call each other now and then. At one time I thought I would move down there, but my roots are firmly here. If I ever need to move, my daughter expects me to move to Minnesota, and I would do it.

Most of my family (brother, niece, aunts, uncles, cousins) are in the general vicinity. One uncle lives in Florida, which gives me ample excuse to go to Florida every winter and visit him.

16 kids? Holy moly! Growing up all my cousins, grandparents, aunts, and uncles lived 2 hours away. I never really got to know any of them.

I opted to a place where we could build our own house and that meant living away from most of the family

I don't mind where I live as seeing the family isn't too hard

That's great that your Dad is still able to meet up with his siblings from time to time. I can understand your reluctance to move.

Since COVID we have had fewer family get togethers, That makes me sad….family is so important . Maybe that’s because I have a lovely family.
