Mother in Law’s Apartment is a Hot Mess

Taking the mother in law home from the emergency room tonight was my first time seeing her apartment since she’s moved in Now mind you she’s been there 19 days now and there are still dozens of unpacked boxes. She says they’re all her winter clothes. Somehow I doubt it Imagine trying to put 9 rooms of stuff into two rooms. She still doesn’t see that she has too much stuff She bought new pots and pans because “the movers stole hers” but there they were in the drawer under the oven with the new pots laying inside the old pots She has just shoved things will nilly into her kitchen cabinets without rhyme or reason and when you open them everything tumbles out No wonder she fell. The place is a tripping hazard Tuesday is her rescheduled mental health status evaluation

We've lived in this house almost 8 years and we both still have boxes of stuff that haven't been unpacked yet. Granted, only the living room is a trip hazard here and that's only because we had a flood in the garage and Pretty brought in the plastic totes that were full of comforters and blankets so they could be washed and re-packed. Oh, plus my workout bench and weights are in the floor.

Question: did they determine if her injuries were from the fall, or from the car wreck?

I agree but I can't force it. I'm hoping the Mental Status Evaluation Tuesday will force the hand of the doctor to order her into Memory Care.

That does sound like a huge mess and with her state of mind it's probably not going to get any better.

Maybe it’s going to take someone else to go through the boxes and get rid of stuff. She may not notice or remember what’s gone. If things are already falling out of cupboards I can see more falls happening.

It sounds as if she is just slipping away with her memory issues and all the stuff...yes, she will keep falling in that setting. What would happen if the brother and you and your husband all went over there and got it organized and just...got rid of stuff? What could she do? Would she even miss it? But sadly it doesn't seem she will be there very long, she is going to need care if she doesn't already. I sure do hope she isn't going to drive anymore, what a worry that can be.

Now that I’m back in town and feeling better I’m going to go over there and tackle it

That is too much stuff. I hope the mental health evaluation reveals something.

Not having things unpacked isn't a big deal. But things need to be out of the way
