Can You Recall?

I remember when I was a child, I would hear older people talking about getting bark from a certain tree, and boiling it to make tea out of it, if a person was sick. I have wondered about that a lot, these past few weeks. How many of you can remember any of the old home remedies. Are there any here who use to have to take castor oil? That has to be the nastiest stuff on the planet. No matter what kind of juice or beverage it was put in, the oil stayed on top. I wonder do kids today have to take it. Enjoy your day Mylot.

Willow bark when boiled releases salycilic acid, the same as is in aspirin. There are lots of herbal remedies even today. My mom would not have given castor oil, as she said it was poisonous. We had a plant once in the yard, pretty interesting but mom said not to handle it. Some people were given cod liver oil as a tonic, and it was high in vitamin a and d so good for you. Also nasty.

I think it might have been sassafras or willow bark. Both of them were used as medicine for centuries. Not sure about sassafras but they sell willow bark as a supplment. I guess it would be like a mild aspirin.

Sassafras was made into a tea and it was to "liven the blood" in the spring time... We dug the roots up and made sassafras tea with LOTS of sugar when I was a kid. Once in a while you can still find sassafras tea bottled under the brand name of Pappy's. It was sold in a clear bottle with a green label when I was in my twenties but the company had to take the compound "sasfrole" I think, out of it before selling it.

Yes, mom gave us castor oil but she gave it to us in a spoon but we got a piece of candy to eat right afterward. I'm not sure one piece of candy was enough of a reward for taking that nasty stuff!
I remember mom making cough syrup from cherry tree bark when I was little. it didn't taste good, either.

My mother did that with a tree that I now know is called Noni.

Oh, I totally get what you mean! It's interesting how some of those old home remedies just stick with you, even if you're not exactly sure how or why they worked. The memory of boiling bark for tea—probably something like willow bark for its pain-relieving properties—is one of those things that sticks in people's minds. It seems so old-fashioned, but it was a practical, natural remedy in its time.
And castor oil... oh boy. It definitely earned its place on the list of most dreaded remedies. The taste, the texture—it was like trying to swallow a spoonful of slippery, bitter regret no matter how many sweeteners you tried to mix it with. It’s probably one of the most infamous "cures" for anything from constipation to sickness. I can't imagine kids today having to take it—though I suppose with some of the natural wellness trends coming back, maybe it does make a brief reappearance in certain circles!

Thank you,a lot of people are going back to that medication is so high. But castor oil had to be the worst. Haven't taken it since I grew up.

I remember the hot toddy, hearing people talk about it, but we instead got castor oil.
