Well, it’s time for a slow skate! Most of the songs until now have been more mid-tempo than rock-out songs. And, yes, I roller skated to this song, so it is a good one to skate to. So, for @rebelann and all the people who’ve been headbanging too much, here’s today’s song.
If You Leave Me Now - Chicago
Here’s a story for you. On May 20, 1969, members of the band Chicago were in Los Angeles at the end of a tour. As the Cubs were also in town, they went to Dodger Stadium to watch a game.
Now, remember the time. This was back when we had “the sign said long-haired freaky people need not apply.” A bunch of guys with long hair, worse, rooting for the visiting team, wouldn’t go over well…especially with a few Marines. Four of them went to town on bassist/singer Peter Cetera’s face, breaking his jaw.
So if Cetera ever had an aversion to playing veterans clubs, you know why.
I loved this song when it came out. I still love this song. Unfortunately, I didn’t know that Cetera and Chicago were going to clone this song 50,000 times (the way REO Speedwagon did with “Time For Me to Fly”).
Cetera, about to turn 81, has retired from music. He said he wanted to quit before he lost his voice. If you listen to those great Chicago albums from the 60s and 70s, you’ll see that he did have a GREAT voice.

@FourWalls I loved KC & the Sunshine Band, especially Please Don’t Go, and Get Down Tonight. Although these days it’s becoming increasingly difficult to get back up again.

Oh, me too. Beautiful ballad. I read it was one of only five songs that weren’t disco to make it to #1 in 1977. Maybe that’s why everyone remembers it so fondly: it was a break from KC & the Sunshine Band!

I consider it a classic. It's hard to believe it's been around that long!

Yeah, you sway and the plastic thinks there’s an 8.3 earthquake.

Great song. I think I probably did sway to this song at the end of the disco nights back in ‘76. I’d like to say “halcyon days” but I really can’t remember.

Hubby and I both knew both song and artist immediately. Good old days.
