Another big rock - Elachbutting Rock

One of the reasons I wanted to go back to the Beacon area in Western Australia was to go to Elachbutting Rock. It’s not far from Beringbooding Rock which I’ve already written about. Elachbutting Rock is another large granite outcrop which stands out from the surrounding countryside. It has a spectacular coloured ‘wave’ and a 30-metre-long tunnel called Monty’s Pass which was caused by a rock slide. I thought it might be very similar to Beringbooding Rock but it has its own beauty and unique features. There is a free camping ground to the south of the rock but you need to be self-sufficient although there is a single toilet in the grounds. We intend to go back there one day to camp and do some more exploring. And don’t you just love some of our names?

@RebeccasFarm The men all camped there while they were building the walls. We might camp there ourselves next time.

The only thing wrong with our names is that the longer, stranger names are difficult to remember.

Such kind of beauty? I think everyone has the same love for going back, one more time.

Have you and Vince gone into the tunnel? Is it a tight squeeze? Sometimes I giggle about the names of things/places in Australia...

@JudyEv Yes, I have seen those photos now... Narrow or not, as long as nobody tries to block me from exiting, I'd be able to go through it. I don't do well in tunnels.

Perhaps you've seen the photos now of Vince in the tunnel. It wasn't too narrow really.

The rock is very cool looking. I wonder how it was formed.

There are other big rocks nearby but these two seem to be the best known.

Elachbutting Rock sounds amazing! That wave formation and Monty’s Pass must be something to see in person. I like how each of those granite outcrops has its own character. And yes, the names are wonderful – so uniquely Australian.

One site says that 'Elachbutting' is thought to mean 'that thing standing' which seems appropriate.

When you stand on the top of it, you can see other big mounds to the south. I must do some research and see if they have names.

Do you know how this and the other rock came to have these names? It really helps put the size of the rock into perspective with 2 people standing in front of it.

Beringbooding is supposed to mean - wait for it - 'big rock'. Elachbutting is thought to mean 'that thing standing'. I was surprised at the size of it when I came to process the photos. It's doesn't seem quite so overpowering when you're next to it.

It's funny how the wind carves out the 'wave' shape.

@judyev Yes yours names often sound quite startling. A town with a somewhat pedestrian name - Morwell - is the one I stayed in with relatives in 1970, and that I believe is where the mushroom poisoner comes from. Just found that out.

Morwell might be better known now but for all the wrong reasons.
