Do you have any pet peeves?

Oh, those pesky pet peeves! I realize there are some that may not know what a pet peeve is. Here in the US, it is something that someone does or says, or possibly a habit they have, that irritates others in some way. Some are simply minor irritations--forgetting to turn off a light, to shut a door, to put something where it belongs. Usually, most people do have a few pet peeves--things that truly irritate them that someone they know says or does. Had to think about my own pet peeves. I don't like it when people don't use their turn signals! And I really hate it when someone zooms around you to pass, then slams on their brakes so you have to do the same thing. I hate when people talk with their mouth full. And I am certainly no snob, but I hate it when people don't seem to have any table manners at all--but then I remind myself, maybe no one taught them? There are a few other pet peeves of course, but these are the ones I see most often that bother me. What are your pet peeves? Pinterest picture

I have to admit that I’m guilty of the “over-apologizing” thing. Even when someone bumps into me I apologize. My rationale is simple: diffuse any situation before it starts. Some people might get mad if they’re bumped into and start an argument over it, but I don’t want to go there. I have a musical pet peeve: people who claim to be “big fans” of bands or singers but can’t spell the name of the artist correctly. Someone writes, “I’m George Straight’s biggest fan!” Really? Then learn to spell his name! And yes, that’s petty (not Tom Petty ), but if I can learn to spell Coach K’s name (Krzyzewski), someone else can learn to spell George Strait’s name.

@MarieCoyle -- it doesn't bother me if someone doesn't care about someone (e.g., Cyndi Lauper, whom I can take or leave). But don't go claiming you're "Lead Zeplin's biggest fan" if you can't spell Led Zeppelin correctly. I don't care for them and even I can spell their name right!

I over-apologize at times, too. Because of my leg issue, I know I am slower than most people. I often tell people to please go ahead, or go around me, if they act impatient or if they have an issue as well. And of course, some people are always in a huge hurry and have no time for a person who moves slower than they do. I think that's where I end up apologizing the most, and usually it does have the affect of slowing someone down a bit. That's not really my intention but hey, if it works, and they slow down, it's OK. We all tend to hurry too much these days. Like you, I don't want to go to the argument thing! When in doubt about a name of someone that's well known, if I am not sure I try to check the spelling. Hopefully, I haven't messed up the spelling on a music icon!

Table manners are important. I remember when my oldest brother brought a friend to dinner. Both boys were in their teens. His friend took his shoes off and put his feet on the dining room table. My Mom looked at him and told him get your feet off my table or leave. He did take his feet off the table. Why would anyone do something like that.

Oh, my! I can't imagine doing that or know anyone who would, but anymore, it seems to take all kinds. I don't blame your mother a bit. I don't want someone's feet on my table, either!

@jstory07 I would think his parents would have drilled table manners into that young man. Army generals are usually strict on the discipline thing. But I suppose there are exceptions. Your mom did the right thing in my opinion.

My major pet peeve right now is screeching kids. We have lived in this apartment complex for over 20 years and every summer there is a kid out playing who insists in screaming and screeching constantly. And, the other pet peeve I have (and my family) is the neighborhood kids stay outside until midnight. These little kids that should be inside are out until 11:30p. and midnight. e-gads. I grew up when you had to be in by dark.

We don’t have any kids shrieking that I have heard, so I guess we are lucky in that respect. I do have a neighbor who is very hard of hearing and refuses to wear her hearing aids. She doesn’t talk in a normal tone of voice, she practically yells, because she can’t hear herself. I wish she would use her hearing aids, it’s really hard to talk to someone that’s so loud.

Do I have any pet peeves, do I, DO I, never mind, best let this one go, wait, hold on. My biggest one now. Save water and reuse your cups. Rinse it out and put new liquid in, do it not throw it in sink when its barely dirty with your own germs. Just reuse it. I have to wash my brothers cup 3 times a day because he refuses to do that. It wastes so much water.

@MarieCoyle Its so easy to do, but not my house and If I try to correct him I get in trouble, but yeah its so simple and easy and saves so much. People be surprised if you just did little things like that how much more resources we would have on hand for everything.

I am a big coffee drinker. I get my mug for the day out in the morning, and use it all day long--I do rinse it out after having a cup. Honestly, some people waste so, so many things every day. If they would stop and think of the money they are wasting, and often what they are doing to the environment, maybe they would change--I don't know. Water is our most valued resource and I agree, it shouldn't be wasted.

@crossbones27 I have children and grandchildren, and I would like for there to be a world left for them to enjoy. It does seem like a lot of people simply do not care.

My pet peeve is starts with loudness, just in general, people who are loud, talking on their phones without regard for anyone around them in stores, restaurants, walking down the sidewalk. I also have a pet peeve about people using the word 'puke' and it really disgusts me, there is better terminology. People just talking about bodily functions is another pet peeve, we all have them, we don't need to hear about yours. Finally people making others feel poorly to the point where it robs them of their confidence. We should all get along or shut our mouths about it.

Yes, loud people can truly be irritating, I have to agree. I think some of us here are old enough to remember we were taught not to ever, ever discuss body functions with the exception of saying ''I'm sick'' or what we would say to excuse ourselves ''May I be excused, please?'' I get what you are saying, sometimes the talk can get very graphic and no one likes to hear that!

I find the younger generation a bit too casual sometimes. They don't seem to say 'thank you' quite as often as I'd like them to!

You are right, and also many don’t seem to understand the “excuse me “ thing, either. But once again I wonder, were they taught these things?

@JudyEv But on the other hand, I have discovered that often someone I don't know will hold a door for me, or help me reach something at a store from a top shelf, or lift something heavy, etc. without me asking or without me looking around to see if there is anyone to help. Lately, it seems like if I go to the store, at least one of the items I need is way up on the very top shelf. I am 5'4'' tall, and while that is somewhat short, many women are my height. I don't understand why stores have to put needed items up so high, and push them back so far. Irritating, but as I said there is usually someone who offers or just reaches for the item(s) for me. There are good people out there, and OH, do I ever appreciate them!

I am fairly tolerant of others most of the time, but my main one is people who show no consideration at the gas station and don't pull up to the furthest pump so no one else can use the pump on the same side. To make it worse, they often will go into the store which will take them an extra few minutes. Sometimes they have to pay inside I realize, but if you are done getting gas..pull up so somebody else can use the pump! Another one is people who wait too long to pull into traffic and keep people waiting behind them. I was behind one yesterday, I could have gone two or three times in the time it took them to go out. I could have pulled around them I suppose, but I kept thinking they would go.

Oh, I hate it when they don’t pull up to the first slot. So inconvenient, especially if they go inside!

I have plenty and I see many of mine in the picture you posted. Just like you, I cannot stand people who have no table manners, this gives me sick. I also hate people who talk in their phone in public at loud voice as they were inside their home. Very rude!

I agree, and I don't think a lot of people realize just how loud they are talking when they are walking around with their cell phones stuck to their head. And I hate it when they hook up to their phone with ear bud thingys, and just walk around everywhere talking, and it always seems like they are just talking to themselves. So irritating.

Yes, those are very irritating. Not just being rude to restaurant workers but to any workers who are waiting on us, etc. I hate seeing that. I do have to say I see a lot less texting and driving since so many cars now hook the phone to the car automatically. But I do see it sometimes, and of course there is always someone with a phone stuck in their ear while they are driving. People moan about getting tickets for this, but still they do it.
