Today was the first meeting of the Baking Club

I was nervous about it all day. I was going to sit and make a topic list of things I wanted to say but I wound up too busy with work so I just kind of flew by the seat of my pants. (You get good at that when you are on year 25 of teaching!) The turnout was good--there were at least 30 students. I was happy to see that they were excited about being able to actually bake this year. In the past it was just cupcake decorating contests. I even asked them if there was any interest in cooking things as well and not just baking and you could see their eyes light up. They said they wanted to keep doing bake sales as a fundraiser. I'm happy about that because I really don't want to have to get involved with finding some kind of product or clothing to sell. They used to meet just once a month but generally agreed that they'd like to do every other week instead. I told them that if there is interest we can even do 2 days back to back to make things like yeast bread, pizza, layer cakes, etc. We'll see how much the enthusiasm is maintained but I was happy with what I saw today. Stay tuned!

It sounds like it was a successful meeting, and they couldn't have a better leader, you'll school them well.

All girls or are there some boys involved, too? Good luck with it.

There was 1 boy there today. I've heard that some of the football players attend sometimes.

It sounds like your meeting went really well—especially for something you went into without much prep! Flying by the seat of your pants clearly worked, and it's no surprise you're good at it after 25 years of teaching. That kind of experience really shines in moments like this.

I don’t really know if I’d want a biology teacher in charge of baking stuff. Lots of Sweeney Todd stuff here. Seriously, congratulations, and hope it’s great all year!

Wow, 30 people is a lot to manage. I bet it grows and you might need a helper. I know you will make it fun for them.
