Mission Accomplished

I wrote about a white wattle-bird appearing in my brother-in-law’s garden. We drove there this afternoon and saw the bird as soon as we pulled up. It was feasting on a grevillea and we snapped photos of it for half-an-hour or so. We thought 40 or 50 photos each was probably enough! We’re still trying to find out just exactly what it is. An albino bird should have pink eyes but this has dark eyes. Our best guess is that it is leucistic meaning it lacks normal pigmentation. There are some dark colours along the wings and in some of the tail feathers. My photos aren’t the best. My only excuse is that he/she didn’t stay still for very long at a time.

You should stop making excuses for your photos. They always look good to me.

@JudyEv You're very welcome. When photos aren't as good as you'd hoped, then it's the fault of the equipment, not of the photographer. How have you not learned that vital piece of information yet, Dearheart?

I do not know what it is but it's cute. You are right an albino should have pink eyes. I hope you can find out more.

@LadyDuck The general consensus seems to be that it is leucistic. Young birds have a lot of colouring and are not nearly so white.

They are lovely!!! You can't see that in the city all the time, if we want to see nature and wildlife, we have to go to provinces.

Luckily we still have quite a few trees and natural areas in our city so we do see birds from time to time.

Thanks for the kind words. We were very lucky that the bird was there and stayed around for ages. Once we had about 50 photos each we gave up and went inside! lol

We think it has the gene mutation that makes it so pale. It's called leucism.

We were very lucky that it hung around for so long although it was darting back and forth quite a bit. Thanks for the kind words.

It does a bit but the beak is definitely designed for sipping nectar.

Beautiful bird! I wonder if it could be “white” instead of “albino.” You know JJ lives in the “albino squirrel capital of the world,” Olney, Illinois. There are albino squirrels but there are ALSO white squirrels that don’t have the pink eyes. Anything to confuse us, right?

I think it is white rather than albino as it doesn't have pink eyes. Yes, I remember JJs white squirrels. There are also albino kangaroos from time to time.

That bird is really beautiful and I've never seen anything like it before. I think your pictures are really good. It will be interesting to know if you ever find out what type of bird it is.

It is definitely a wattle bird and we think it has leucism or lack of pigmentation. Thanks for the kind words.
