Female jockeys are gaining a greater share of race rides

Ten years ago, Michelle Payne won Australia’s premier horse race, the Melbourne Cup, becoming the first female jockey to do so. Since then, more and more girls have trained as jockeys. When Michelle started out, most race-courses had no facilities for females and she often had to change in the cleaner’s room or somesuch. At country race meetings across northern Western Australia, women riders are beginning to outnumber the men, both on the track and on the winner’s podium. This season, women have taken out seven of the ten cup races across the Pilbara, Kimberley and Gascoyne. There were once fewer opportunities for women riders but their skill is now being more widely recognised. At least this is a sport when both sexes compete on a level playing field for the same prize money. I don’t have a photo of a horse-race. This photo was taken at the Blackwood Marathon. The horse is undoubtedly a thoroughbred and at full stretch. And ridden by a girl.

It's a beautiful horse. I would have thought women would have been the preferred riders for horse races with their smaller frames.

It was a traditionally men's pursuit since racing began but more and more jockeys are now women.

@JudyEv Most stuff that was fun and interesting were done by men since they left the cooking, cleaning and raising the kids to the women.

@DaddyEvil At least that has changed a little although some women work and still do most of the cooking, cleaning, etc.

That's a stunning picture. I'm glad women are getting a bigger opportunity to ride.

Influence is a great deal in life. I just hope we influenced for the better not out of our selfishness and other ulterior motives just like what is happening today.

@JudyEv I think so, but I hope all those ideas are for the good and without any confusion nor twisted the real truth.

Some ideas take a long time to change, that's for sure.

There are quite a few female jockeys now here in the UK, but it’s still predominantly men who hang onto the horses. As size is important in selecting jockeys, you wonder why females weren’t the preferred choice back in the day?

@JudyEv I’ve always like stable girls. Definitely better than unstable girls.

I guess it was mostly prejudice of a sort. Women were seen as not stronge enough, not brave enough maybe. A lot ride trackwork but not so many become jockeys.

I am glad that finally women riders have more opportunities. This horse in the photo is beautiful.

@JudyEv Still in our days, most of the time, women are paid less for the same profession and work. I hope this is going to change.

@LadyDuck It has changed a little perhaps but not much. Men mostly still command a higher wage than women in the same job.

The comment about the pay being the same for men or women was interesting I thought. It hadn't really hit me before that the pay would be equal.

This reminds me of the good book National Velvet. Also a classic movie National Velvet.

That was a great book. I loved the original movie with Elizabeth Taylor, Mickey Rooney and Angela Lansbury. They were all so young at the time.

I never understood why more women were not jockeys as they are naturally lighter. I know a lot is from way back when we were considered too dumb and weak.

I think it was mostly the prejudice - and the male jockeys wouldn't have been very welcoming either.

It's long been a strange anomaly that far more girls ride than boys, yet the top professional riders in racing and show jumping and eventing were mainly men. At least that was the way it was when I was young but it is slowly changing.

It's starting to change now but you're right. Perhaps women jockeys are able to make the low weights more easily.
