Mushroom foraging in Cape Cod

Went with my mom to Cape Cod for a week from 9/7 to 9/14. First thing we did in the mornings is go mushroom foraging. It was a bit tiring when the sun was fully out but it was fun. We got a decent amount of mushrooms and after a quick boil we put them in quart-size storage bags and froze them. Now they are in my mom’s freezer. We can fry them and also use them to make mushroom soup. Perhaps we can even marinate them but I’d have to ask my mom about that. Some of the mushrooms were huge, even bigger than my hand.

It was a last minute thing. My mom’s friend’s husband didn’t go so she asked me to come and I said yes.

I miss the wild mushrooms we picked in Latvia, Now if I have any they are the usual white kind or canned,

I went mushroom foraging in Latvia when I was a kid. I think it was in Urmala (not sure on spelling).

@lovebuglena Yeah, most mushrooms are too expensive if you have to buy them. With morels, we soak them in saltwater overnight, then slice them up, dip them in egg and milk mixture, dredge them through flour with seasonings mixed in and fry them in a little oil. They're delicious that way! Even Pretty will eat them that way and she hates mushrooms! (The last time I fried some like that, Pretty stood beside me as I fried them taking them off the plate as soon as I pulled them out of the oil and eating them. I had to tell her to stop because I wouldn't have gotten any the way she was eating them. )

@DaddyEvil my mom bought them at an Italian store once called Eately. Don’t remember how much they were per pound but they were expensive. I tried them. They were really good fried.

Yes, indeed they were huge. Around here after a fire in the forests we can pick mushrooms that sprout up almost immediately. Many sell them for big bucks to the local restaurants.

I don’t know how they can get so huge but as long as they are not rotten inside I’ll take them.

I love them. Some people dried them in the machine (whatever it’s called) and the smell was sooooooo good! Some of the mushrooms were bigger than my hand.

@porwest you don’t have to ask me twice lol. Offer me mushrooms and I’ll gobble them up. The edible kind, not those that make you see things…

I'd be nervous about mushroom foraging. I think I would rather get mine from the store or farmers markets.

My mom’s friend is a mushroom expert and my mom knows a lot as well so I didn’t have to worry.

That sounds fun. I read a book about a guy who foraged for mushrooms and truffles and ended up starting a business selling them to restaurants.

When we still owned the farm, we'd forage mushrooms in the fall, too. But we were hunting for morels. I'm glad you/your mom know which ones are safe to eat.

I’d love some morels but they don’t grow where we were. My mom found one once where we live but haven’t seen anymore since.
