The next meeting of the Baking Club is on Monday

The students were really excited to hear that we were actually going to MAKE stuff this year rather than just decorate cupcakes. The first meeting was short with me just introducing myself, telling them that I wanted to do some actual baking, finding out what they did last year, etc. I didn't want to get nuts and go all in for the 2nd meeting but they looked so happy about baking that I'm going to have them making something easy next week--caramel apples with toppings. (no nuts) I found a simple recipe. It calls for using a microwave but I don't know if the life skills room has one. The caramels and cream can also be melted on the stovetop if it doesn't. So tomorrow I will have to scope out that classroom and see if there is a microwave, what pots/trays/spoons/bowls they have, etc. There is apparently money in the club's account so I can order what I need. I'll bring in a pot to melt the caramels though rather than buying one. I do already have a big jar of sprinkles and a box of crushed graham crackers here already which are 2 of the suggested "dippers" so I won't have to buy them. I posted on the club's Google Classroom announcing what I had planned and asking the members to let me know who was planning to attend. I don't want to under/overbuy things. We shall see how it works out.

That will be fun and yummy, too! You can get inventive with toppings—tiny chocolate chips, crushed Halloween candy, etc. It will be fun!

@NJChicaa Hey, would things like edible flowers be helpful? I got a chance to get some of those, but I couldn’t think of anything I could do with them.

@NJChicaa True. Who wants edible flowers when you could get CANDY? I wouldn’t!

@AmbiePam I don't think the kids would go for them

That is one class I’d like to see. Just because I know how excited the kids are going to be, and what fun they’ll have.

It isn't a class. (I wish it was!) It is an after-school club. It is paid but I think the stipend is like $500 so it isn't like it is going to be a huge windfall.

@NJChicaa Even better! If it’s after school then you KNOW they want to be there. And they aren’t stuck decorating cupcakes, although I’m sure that person tried their best. It’s also a skill they can use (no offense to clubs that involve things like chess).

I hope they do the right thing and indicate if they're coming or not. And then turn up if they say they're coming.
