Today’s slower dancing song is a surprise, sort of. While this was a hit, this version wasn’t the hit version. Sorry, but you know me and my love for this guy! So, for @rebelann and everyone else who wants a slow song to dream and sway to, here’s today’s song.
#7: We’re All Alone - Boz Scaggs
The unfortunate thing is that Rita Coolidge covered this and had the hit with her moldy white bread version. The good thing, at least at the roller skating rink, is that Boz Scaggs’ original version of this was the B-side of his big hit “Lido Shuffle.”
I’m going to show my Boz bias: I think Silk Degrees is one of those “perfect” albums. No songs to skip, no songs to ignore, nothing but start-to-finish brilliance. Plus, this album helped introduce me to the greatness of Allen Toussaint, who wrote “What Do You Want the Girl to Do.” Most of the album, though, is for dancing.
Not this beautiful love ballad. And, as you may have never heard this version (being subjected to that lame Coolidge cover), enjoy this.
We’re All Alone
Written by William R. Scaggs
Recorded by Boz Scaggs
From Silk Degrees, 1976

“moldy white bread version”?
How very dare you! I love Rita’s version and her voice is pure velvet. All Time High is one of my favourite Bond movie themes. #TeamRita
Talking of things moldy (mouldy), here’s a one to get your teeth stuck into:

@FourWalls I love “Winchester Cathedral”. Weird but wonderful.
What about the band - Middle of the Road. Were they MOR or not? I was a little bit in love with their lead singer, Sally Carr, at the time. Never missed TOTP when they were on.
I prefer the Jackie Wilson version for sure. He had a great voice.

@Orson_Kart -- Middle of the Road never made it here. I listened to a couple of their songs, very catchy 70s pop.
And since you like "Winchester Cathedral," here's the Homer & Jethro parody.

I had to look up which was which (title vs. band name). So that’s what they said at the beginning of “Winchester Cathedral,” “oh moldy old dough, oh moldy old dough…”
Sorry about the knock on Rita. “All Time High” is a good song. She and James Taylor had this annoying knack of taking R&B songs and turning them into MOR (middle of the road, 70s term for easy listening) mush. Compare her version of “Higher and Higher” to the Jackie Wilson original, for instance…. (PS: generally like her music and Taylor’s, too!)

Sorry to be so critical of her version, but I had his rendition first.
