House Still Not Done

Elk on the property

We still are not in a house. The foundation is finally in after a failed attempt of the cement truck trying to make it up the 20% grade driveway. They had to run several hoses up the driveway with crews working together. I was surprised how well it went. We think, crossing our fingers, they will be running the water lines this coming week. It's supposed to rain so we'll see how that goes. It takes such a long time for each step. The permits were the longest and between all of them, the septic drawings, etc. it took months. Water has to come from the top of the mountain from a road up there. Power has to have the transformer put in at the bottom of the driveway at the tiny road below and ran up. Everyone has to coordinate together. On a good note, the DOT permit to bring the house in two pieces from 300 miles away is in effect, so just maybe we might actually see a house before Thanksgiving. Sure would be nice! The con, a bulldozer will have to bring it up the driveway since the huge truck won't make it up the grade. Next year, my son wants to pave the drive and not just have gravel. We have 4 wheel drives and can even pull our trailers but those huge rigs can't do it. It's already in the 40's at night. For some, that is doable, but in a travel trailer, it's pretty cold. We have heaters but these are not insulated like a home. The floors are so cold. We are boondocking on his property without electricity. We have generators, power banks, batteries, ecoflows, etc. I can use a Keurig, electric skillet and more in here. We have a Blackstone and three huge BBQ's so not without a way to cook. With the generator, I can use my microwave. I just don't run it often. Maybe two hours a day. My refrigerator is running on propane. I can use it on shore power, battery and propane. It's more efficient on propane when boondocking. We have a low boy to pump the tanks and take to the RV dump. It's pretty cool we can do this but sometimes it gets old. I lived in my trailer camp hosting for two years, so know what to expect with snow, ice, high winds and all the winter weather stuff. My poor son just bought his trailer and already feeling the cold. I hope everyone is doing great. I've been reading trying to catch up. The photo is one of the elk that was on the property a couple days ago. We have a lot of critters here. Elk, deer, mt lions, coyotes and more.

I wish you luck. You are welcome to come to town and use our washer or and bunk here if you get sick of being cold. I can imagine doing some of what you are doing when I was in my 20's. We lived two years in N. Idaho without power or running water- when we were young. Sure not now. I love the elk photo. Take care.

That is so nice of you. Thank you. We are OK. I have my ex daughter-in-law in town if it gets bad. My son is going to Aberdeen tomorrow to get some panels to line the trailers with to help. We have a lot of heat sources. Just so expense running time. I hear the pack of coyotes out there in the trees now.

We love the property and animals but this humidity in a trailer gets old after awhile.

@porwest The humidity is awful. Everything feels wet and sticky all the time. I wish there was a place that was not so much and not hot in the summer.

@noni1959 Humidity bothers me more than heat. It's just unbearable sometimes.

Very long. Living in travel trailers in high humidity off grid can be tiring.

I appreciate the prayers. Woke up early to the elk going through the property. The babies are getting huge.

@noni1959 What part of the US are you in? West coast? We saw a lot of elk (wapiti) when we visited the west coast.

It sounds to me like you are adapting as well as you can. I know from past experiences of building a home, those pesky permits can take half of forever! Plus everything else, too. Can you use an electric throw or electric blanket at night? They help me so much. I hope the time goes fast for you and the house gets put together and set up soon. From your descriptions, you have a lovely setting to enjoy, no matter whether you are in the house yet or not, so that's good.

We aren't hooked to electric since they haven't dug the trench and worked with PUD to get it all in yet. We use generators, power banks, and my son's truck which has a built in 30 amp generator. It is very costly so mostly use small power stations inside for charging up stuff, making coffee, and occasional cooking. An electric blanket would zap the charge. I have a more "deluxe" trailer with a good furnace. My son bought a cheaper model with a heater but doesn't heat as well. I told him he can come in here.

@MarieCoyle We are keeping warm so far and it's been pretty chilly at night with a lot of rain. My daughter is trying hard with PT but will be a long time before she can walk again. Thank you for asking.

@noni1959 mi just hope you can keep warm enough if it gets really cold. I’m sure you and your son are more than ready to get this over with and get into the new house! How is your daughter doing now?

It sounds like you are having to rough it a bit. Even with all that you still seem hopeful and you aren’t letting things get you down. Do you wear slippers to keep your feet warm on the cold floors?

That's nice you are building a new home. I hope we can buy a house next year. We are eyeing my cousin's house nearby, because he wants to sell it, he already have a house in other city, that is why he wants to sell the old one.

My son had a manufactured home built. He now wishes he did the log cabin built on site. I don't want to buy again at my age. He asked me to come live with him and stop working so hard. Works for me. Yet, I think I do more work here but loving the outdoors.

I see a lot of deer's and baby deer's, skunks and beavers but no elk. I would love to see a elk.In Looking glass they have cougars that visit them every once in awhile. Good luck in getting in your house.

When I lived in Scio, OR, I was about 10 miles outside of Scio, and about 30 from Albany. We had herds hanging around all the time. I hope you get to see them soon.

How lovely to have elk and deer there. I wouldn't be quite so happy about the others but hopefully you'll co-exist. I hope the various things keep moving along for you.

Thank you! We got word the Department of Transportation issued the permit for bringing the home 300 miles and if all goes well, mid-next week we'll see it coming in. I'm so excited. We'll still have a few weeks of construction, carpet etc. but it's a move in the right direction.
