I do not know if this would work for you

My little kiddo that I am working with this year is on Facebook. I do not see that the profile is private. I did follow it. There are almost four hundred followers. Not bad for our little community. It has been so helpful for me to see what his needs and activities are outside of home. His mom shares pictures and day to day events. Sharing our beautiful life as a special needs family Romans 12:12 . IQSEC2 Genetic Disorder Autism LGS & Epilepsy . I do not think I can put up his personal information because of confidentiality, but if you want to read about the genetic disorder, this was helpful to me. LGS is Lennox Gastault Syndrome. It has to do with multiple types of seizures. Mom says at one point our kiddo had so many meds he just wanted to sleep and that is all. He became very grumpy. When she expressed concern to the neurologist the response was (my paraphrase) " Maybe since we have his seizures under control you can now see what his personality is really like". That is not what this little boy's personality is really like. He is fun and funny and alert and laughs a lot. He loves to have you hold under his arms and help him jump. Mom is moving in a different direction, and although he still has seizure medications they have brought the levels down. She is giving him supplemental nutrition and the type of seizures we see is something they call "infantile spasms" that do not affect his levels of consciousness or functioning. He is a delightful, active child who laughs loudly and enjoys being at school with his friends. He bears weight when asked to stand. He is not grumpy, he is not sleepy. I admit, sometimes he needs to rest, but the amount of energy he spends just on day to day life would make me need to rest as well. When I think I feel sorry for myself I have to think in awe about this little family and my other kiddo as well. How much effort it must take to just be the parent and always be on guard of his health and well being. I think that is all I can legally share, but that is who I spend four mornings a week with.

The whole educational staff is exceptional. We really want him with us at school. There is one little blonde girl with adorable curls and she says "Roman is my best friend".

I would not doubt it. We are coming a long way with providing opportunities for our special needs kids.

Since I have been involved with special needs persons for almost forty years I have seen great progress in what and how we accommodate these special needs.

Thanks for sharing this. Some parents are really incredible with how they manage a child with multiple disorders. I wish all concerned the very best.

I do think this mom is remarkable in the way she advocates for her kiddo. Dad is pretty great too, I have met him.

I am not his parent, but one of his educators. His mom is great.

@GardenGerty In your write-up, you sound more like a parent than an educator. Well, an educator is a parent, no less.

I looked up Lennox Gastaut Syndrome and foumd that one treatment for it is removing half of the brain! Now, that's severe!

He has three types of seizures. The most severe is being managed with a VNS--vagus nerve stimulator--an implant that reminds me of the pacemaker my husband has. The device senses these severe seizures and stops them. Occasionally if one is too strong his care giver has a magnet to swipe across the implant to reset it. I knew a young woman once who either had part of her brain removed or maybe just some connections severed. She did that as an adult. After recovering from the surgery and seeing that it was effective she walked across the United States in celebration. She did a presentation of her beautiful pictures she took along the way.

It is nice to see where the mother is so involved. That is not always the case.

What is also great is dad is very involved as well. Of course a lot of the day to day falls to mom, but she has put up some great videos of Dad riding this little guy on a snow sled with him.

I do not think any of us know what kind of future he will have. His family and teachers and therapists will make it the best in many ways.

Over the years I have known of people who put severely disabled children in group homes, etc. She is very determined for this boy to get to have a good quality of life.

It makes me stop and think regularly about what it would take to be his parent.
