Well, I Got Laid Off Today

I've spent the last eight years at a job I really liked, but I lost it today. My company had started to struggle a lot, lately, and they have been making cuts everywhere they possibly can. But the economy is starting to get really bad because of the tariffs, and they have had to start letting people go. I knew my position wasn't absolutely essential, so I'm not surprised, and I was already mentally prepared for this to happen. I believe they were genuinely very sad to let me go, and I appreciated that.
However, money is definitely going to start being an issue. You usually have either money OR time, and now I have time, so y'all may be seeing me around here more often! In the meantime, I will also be able to fulfill my latest portrait commission more quickly and to do more with my art and writing, so I'm hopeful.

Sorry to hear this. Hopefully you have a good emergency fund in place to hold you out or at least will have some unemployment coming in or something. The economy is actually quite good, so I don't think you will have any trouble finding a new job.
In the meantime, looking forward to seeing more of you around here.

The unemployment rate is slightly up but still pretty stable. Job growth seems to be down, and I've seen recent articles that people are having a hard time getting hired, although that mainly seems to be recent college graduates - not sure if I would be better or worse off, with more experience but higher salary expectations. However, we do have some savings, and I do qualify for unemployment, so I have a bit of a fallback. Health insurance is my biggest concern, especially since premiums are about to go up on many plans. I will try to some things out. Thank you for your kind wishes!

@porwest it's going to go up again, because the Republicans in Congress cut the tax credits that helped make it more affordable. The Democrats requested the Republicans to reinstate the tax credits that they cut for the ACA and also to roll back the cuts to Medicare, but they refused to do that. This is why the government shutdown happened. What we need is to just have Medicare for all and cut the greedy insurance companies out of it. People shouldn't have to depend on their jobs for heath insurance, because look what just happened to me - I didn't do anything wrong, and I'm still out on the street. I do appreciate your confidence in me, though; it's definitely a help to have some moral support as I navigate my situation.

@AliCanary The unemployment rate really never has had much to do with necessarily what's out there and available. It has to do with short term decisions by some companies to lay off and in some cases, people choosing to quit. As I drive around, I see "Now Hiring" signs everywhere and many businesses are complaining they are getting few applicants.
Either way, I am sure everything will work out for you. Nothing I have heard so far makes me think you don't have at least a handle on things.
As for healthcare, ever since the passage of the ACA, it's done nothing but go up and up and up. We really need to get rid of that.

Fortunately my husband is working full time, but of course I don't want to lay it all on him. I currently have one piece of artwork in a gallery show and I have one portrait commission to fulfill, so maybe the art will help bring in some money.

@AliCanary - That's the problem, it's hard to have a job that is not interesting and not satisfying.

Yes, that's the trick! It's pretty easy to find a job, but hard to find a good, satisfying one.

I am sorry to hear that. The last thing you want to be is laid off in a bad economy. Can you get unemployment?

Yes, I can, since I was just laid off instead of fired or quit. I will definitely do that if it takes a while to find work again.

This economy is just not great, and potentially getting worse. Fortunately I can get unemployment if I need to, but I don't know how much it would be.
