1963 - The Birds The Birds is a horror thriller film produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock...always a good sign...and loosely adapted from a short story of the same name by Daphne du Maurier. Hitchcock's signature cameo appearance happens in the early part of the movie when he walks his dogs (they are actually his own dogs) out of the pet shop. Socialite Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) goes to a pet shop in San Francisco. She runs into lawyer Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) who is there to purchase lovebirds for his sister Cathy's 11th birthday. Mitch and Melanie speak briefly; and Mitch leaves without the birds. Melanie has an idea to purchase the birds, finds out that Mitch is staying with his family on Bodega Bay and drives up there with the lovebirds, planning to surprise them. Melanie rents a boat to cross the bay and quietly leaves the birds at the doorstep. Mitch sees her and drives to catch her as she docks. Melanie reaches the dock and is attacked by a seagull. The birds of Bodega Bay seem bent on attacking the residents; and what follows is full of suspense and horror. This movie is done as only Hitchcock can do it; and I highly recommend this film. It also stars Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and Veronica Cartwright. Photo Credit: Pixabay

I was way too young when I saw that movie, which is probably what put me off of horror movies. And, by today’s standards, that’s an incredibly tame movie…but Hitchcock knew how to scare the bleep out of you without showing anything gory.

Yes, I have seen this one. And Alfred Hitchcock really tormented poor Tippi Hedren in this movie. She certainly suffered for her art!

It was a great movie and actually the idea came to Hitchcock after a real thing that happened where he lived. I will post about it soon.

A classic film although I have not seen it. It was always going to be a success with input from Alfred Hitchcock and Daphne du Maurer. My favourite of hers is Rebecca.

I saw this movie some time ago, and I remember that the sound effect they used for the birds was very weird, like electronic noises instead of actual bird sounds. It was unnerving!
