Some Examples Of How the Mother-in-Law Did on the Psych Testing

While we don't have the actual results yet and the doctor didn't share anything with us yet, the Mother-in-Law was talking about some of the things she had to do. She thought there were only 48 states. She was asked to name as many as possible in 30 seconds. She could only name 3. She didn't know who the current President is. She couldn't draw a clock. She was asked to name as many animals as she could in 30 seconds. She couldn't think of any. Needless to say, we're sure she has dementia and we're sure she didn't do well on the testing. We just need to find out how far gone she is, if medication would help at this point, and whether or not she's capable of living alone.

No matter what, it truly doesn't sound like she should be alone at all. I have to wonder..does she cook? Scary to think she might leave the stove on and forget about it. And with her memory problems, taking medication without supervision would not have a good outcome.

I remember when my mom had a test like this. Broke my heart. I really hope medication will help. I know they can always help agitation. If you can actually get her to take her medication.

It doesn't sound as if she did well at all although many of us when put on the spot wouldn't do as well as we might. But still, those are very bad results.

I used to have to administer "mini mental exams when I worked as Social Services Designee in a care home. It is amazing what people "lose" before we realize that they themselves are lost.

Medicine sometimes makes someone hallucinate so it can mess up the brain, it seems like she needs a friend to talk to and don't leave her alone.

Sad that she had so much trouble with the questions and certainly a sign that she has dementia. I'm sure you weren't surprised at all that she didn't do very well.

When I went for my Wellness Exam yesterday, they gave me 3 items to remember; but they forgot about the clock drawing exercise. Your MIL sounds like she has a very advanced case. I hope you can put her in the wing of the institution that she needs the most.
