Wow, That Was Some Cheap Milk

These days, when you find a real bargain, it almost makes you want to shout from the hilltops. I am nowhere near a hilltop, so I will just shout from my tiny little platform here on myLot.
I went to Ruler Foods yesterday, shopping list in hand, and one of the items on my list was milk.
We use 2% if you were curious.
As per the usual, I put a gallon in my cart, and thought the price was actually fair at $2.09 a gallon. But before I stepped away, something caught my eye—reduced sitckers on some bottles.
I glanced up and saw they had half gallons on sale for 56 cents, and they weren't expired, but simply nearing expiration.
They would have a sell by date of October 27th. That's plenty of time to use a half gallon of milk, for sure. And the price would drop the per gallon cost down to $1.12. I should have bought two, but I only picked up one even if I rarely buy half gallons.
So, as per unit costs, I essentially saved 97 cents. I thought that was an awesome deal. What do you think?

I don't usually buy milk in large quantities because it tends to curdle before I've used it all up. I've lately gone back to buying soy milk and it seems to be keeping well.

@porwest Yeah, some of the others do taste awful but to my tastes, Silk brand soy is quite drinkable and creamy.

@BarBaraPrz Everyone has their thing. It's just not mine. Nothing against it of course.

Wow that really is a bargain. I use 2% also and a half gallon is around the $2 mark.

@porwest I agree that buying a gallon is more cost effective but we don't drink much milk so a gallon would be wasted. I have to look for bargains in other ways to offset the cost of a dumb half gallon

We didn't have milk in the house for years. I refused to pay more for a half gallon, it wasn't being used fast enough, so I removed it from the "list." The rule stands today. If we start throwing milk away, we don't buy milk. But I also won't pay more per ounce to use and waste less.

Great catch. I don't remember the last time I bought milk so have no idea how much they cost these days. Can't believe you drink 2% milk. Anything but whole milk is terrible. In my opinion.

You picked up a good bargain IF you use the milk in time.

We buy milk near its expiration date if it's on special. We seem to get through a lot really.
