A lovely letter from the government was waiting for me when I arrived home this afternoon. At first I was reluctant to open it because government agencies usually only write letters when they think you owe them money, but not this time. I tore open the envelope, expecting to encounter red lettering indicating a bill to be paid urgently, but instead I was the recipient of good news. In November £200 is to be deposited in my bank account because I am officially old and cold - the winter fuel allowance! Everyone over 66 gets this money every year even if they are wealthy. Along with others I think this should really only be paid to those on low income, but to make it means tested would be an expensive process so it just goes to everyone - including me. I think there’s a bit of free space in my investment account that could use it.
