Old and cold, apparently.

A lovely letter from the government was waiting for me when I arrived home this afternoon. At first I was reluctant to open it because government agencies usually only write letters when they think you owe them money, but not this time.
I tore open the envelope, expecting to encounter red lettering indicating a bill to be paid urgently, but instead I was the recipient of good news.
In November £200 is to be deposited in my bank account because I am officially old and cold - the winter fuel allowance! Everyone over 66 gets this money every year even if they are wealthy.
Along with others I think this should really only be paid to those on low income, but to make it means tested would be an expensive process so it just goes to everyone - including me.
I think there’s a bit of free space in my investment account that could use it.

Good news? Wow! What a concept. Even the wealthy get money. Interesting.

Congratulations!
I applied for heating assistance on the 1st of October. We haven't heard back from the government yet. (Last year they gave me an allowance of $600 to use for heating during the winter. Our bills were around $100 a month.)
We had a lot of construction work done on our house over the summer, including added insulation in the walls and ceilings, new storm windows and new weather striping around the doors. Hopefully, that means our heating and cooling bills this winter and next summer will be much cheaper.

Congrats! It's seldom we get money from the government. We never get a refund on our taxes, happy to break even.
