Bad news for friend

So, friend has gotten some bad news from a plumber. Since his house was built in 1955, in the days when metal was used for the pipes, they are corroding and decaying. The plumber said there will come a time when they all need replaced. He would not be able to afford to do that, and is bummed about it. I told him the plumber may be overstating the case. I had somebody tell me something about my foundation once which turned out not to be true, so maybe this is a case of that, I don't know..or maybe the pipes he has may last several more years. I know one thing...he isn't living here!! as much as he thinks he would like to!

Until you get a leak and even then, you don't necessarily HAVE to replace the pipes. We have metal pipes and they keep telling us every time Hiller comes out that we need to have the pipe work redone. We still haven't after I think five years. Now gram's house is different. There's something going on with her pipes and will have to be replaced and that is going to be about 6K which we don't have. I hope your friend isn't too stressed about it. I would just find out more information.

He did just have a big blockage in the shower. As I told him, the plumber may be overstating the case. He isn't going to be able to afford continuously paying for blockages though.

@snowy22315 Hiller gave us something to put down the drains once a week. It works. Depending on where the blockage is you can buy a snake from the store and put it down every now and then. That's what we do especially since I have the longest hair in the family right now and it always fonds it's way to the drain lol.

@JordanLader Maybe they will last longer with better maintenance. I will suggest that.

I think you are right, the plumber overstate the case hoping to get a job to do. He should start a good monthly maintenance so that those pipes can last longer.

@LadyDuck No, he's a pain in the butt, and the older he gets the worse he gets. He has those medical problems he won't deal with which makes me crazy. His stomach is often upset unless he eats the blandest of foods. He can't walk more than half a mile etc, trouble bending over etc. I am sorry about it, but he has brought this on himself. Plus he is just difficult to talk to and puts no thought into his conversation.

@snowy22315 - I am sure you would not appreciate having him living there.

We have been told twice now that we need re piped. Our house was built in 1930, but so far we just stumble along. One plumber said $4000 and one said $8000.

It might be something he really doesn't have to worry about at this time.

Why two plumbers offered much different quotation?Usually the quotation from different person shouldn't have so much difference.

That's true. Iron pipes will rust after long years. They have to be replaced in the long run.

Plumbing issues can be very costly. I hope they aren’t as bad as the plumber said.

Even if they are hopefully they won't cause major problems anytime soon.

@snowy22315 The thing about plumbing problems is that they never happen at a convenient time. That and the cost of an emergency plumbing problem is so ridiculous.

I hope they told him wrong. That much money would depress me.

Oh no. I hope there aren't big leaks and corrosion. I had to deal with tree roots messing up the pipes once in a house and it was not fun and spendy.

Yes, anything with tree roots is bad news. I have an issue with them in my septic. That reminds me I need some root killer.

You're right about plumbers, etc, being wrong from time to time. I hope he doesn't have to move. The pressure would really be on!

I hope the pipes last as long as your friend. It can be very expensive and may not actual need to be replaced for several years anyway.

I hope so. He didn't need this pipe drama on top of everything else though.

If the pipes can work normally for the time being, don't need replace with new materials. The plumber is not necessarily right.Maybe they said serious case with other purposes.
