A recipe for bread-making

The collage shows more of the interesting items we saw at Mangowine Homestead in Western Australia. Jane Adams ran an inn at Mangowine and prospectors making their way to the goldfields would have been glad to find somewhere where they could buy bread. Next to the recipe you can see the bread tins she used. The tins are sitting on top of the oven. Below the recipe is a bread ‘paddle’ used for sliding the baked bread out of the oven. A simple home-made broom is next to the paddle and the lower right photo shows a hand-made mat.

I like that museum in Western Australia that has the way to make bread.

I never could get loaves of bread to cook right. Either they were burned on the bottom or the middle of the loaves were still raw when I took them out of the oven. I started making homemade rolls with the dough instead and those always came out delicious! (I haven't made bread in several years...)

@JudyEv I agree with you. Fresh bread is the best smell in the world!

I don't think there is anything that smell as delicious as fresh bread straight from the oven.

That broom was essential for her wood-fired oven. It's needed to sweep ash and debris from the cooking floor before you cook. I am going to check this bread recipe.

@JudyEv I noticed that this recipe uses a lot less water than the modern recipes for bread. I want to try it.

Those are quite the photos. The oven reminds me of a pizza oven. I love the wooden paddles.

It did look like a pizza oven but I don't think they knew about them at that point.

The bread recipe and the baking tins haven't changed. Doesn't she have lovely writing?

It's very pretty. I wish now that I'd had a better look at it.

Just now
That is so interesting. People certainly worked hard back in those days just for a staple like bread. We take so much for granted by being able to just pop into a store and buy what we need.

Interesting. I haven't made any bread or rolls in eons. Made some scones about 20 years ago.
