According to KAKE channel 12 reports, all six of the Kansas Congressional Delegation--senators and representatives--are refusing their pay checks until the Federal government goes back to work.
"All six members of the Kansas congressional delegation voluntarily put a halt to payment of their federal salaries during the ongoing government shutdown."
I wonder if any other states are following suit? I think myLot land would be interested in knowing. It kind of makes me proud of Kansas.
Of course I also know that this gesture will gain them a lot of political good will from constituents. It is good advertising in my opinion.
Will it do any good?

That is what Bob said, they probably are not hurting themselves too badly, but it does feel that they are considerate of their constituents.

People have been saying all over the internet that this needed to happen. I am glad some of them are doing it. It is a solidarity type of move.

That's awesome.. I figured some legislators would stand up and refuse their paychecks. They should all do this..and demand to go back to work!! I like how people want to blame the Dems, when there are no Republicans to negotiate with.

@porwest Read Heather Echola's post. BTW, I guess you are fine with insurance premiums sky rocketing, maybe you have military insurance Tri care or Champus or whatever. Most people can not afford double the insurance costs, and shouldn't have to pay it.

The Republicans have voted 9 times to reopen the government almost unanimously. The Democrats have voted 9 times to keep it closed. Why is this the Republican's fault? They CAN'T reopen it. Only the Democrats can. The Republicans only have 53 votes. We need 60.
It should also be noted that of these politicians refusing their paychecks, 5 are Republicans and only 1 is a Democrat.

@snowy22315 I did read it. So, I am not sure what point you are trying to make here. As for insurance premiums, they have skyrocketed since and because of the Affordable Care Act, pushed through by the Democrats and of course, otherwise known as Obamacare...
So, again...what are you trying to say here? lol

I highly doubt it. It sounds to me like kids throwing a temper tantrum.

@GardenGerty Everytime I hear about headlines like this, it makes no sense. Our leaders don't know how to resolve their differences much less anything else. This isn't the first, nor will it be the last we'll face a govornment shutdown. People voluntarrily pushing away a paycheck proves what? They have no real idea what they're doing. I'm sure many have no idea what it's like to truely go without. It's not like by giving up their salleries, they'll lose their homes, and rely on the same assistance low income americans need on the daily.

I am on pins and needles to get my SS at the usual time in November; otherwise, it's the end for me.

I'm glad that they are making an effort to let their standings be known.

@porwest I made no reference to Democrat or Republican. SOMEONE is making his/her opinions known.

@LindaOHio But I also know what your positions are, and where you are MOST LIKELY passing the blame. Therefore, it is important to make you aware, or help you to be aware where the blame SHOULD be appropriately placed.
Trump did not shut down the government and cannot reopen it. The Republicans did not shut down the government and cannot reopen it. Only the Democrats can (aside from other forcible actions the Republicans can take). But if the Republicans USE those forcible actions, the Democrats have no say in the matter and cannot negotiate terms so...
They lose either way. Thus, they should just vote to pass the reconciliation bill and take up their argument in another way and at another time.
They don't have the power to negotiate. They DO have the power to reopen the government.

They are all Republicans, it should be noted, who are taking this stand, aside from one Democrat. I think that's important, because it is also important to note the Republicans did not shut down the government. The Democrats did. And the Republicans have voted 9 times to reopen it, and the Democrats have voted 9 times to keep it shut down.
Just so the record is crystal clear, here.

I don't think it will do any good but it's a nice gesture.

No, it won’t do anything. Most congress members are multi millionaires, and they get paid monthly…so they haven’t missed a check yet. But it is a symbolic gesture.

That's good of them to do. Still, it angers me that some essential workers like Air Traffic Controllers won't get paid and SNAP recipients won't be getting their Aid. It really sickens me.

We should have it in writing that they don't get their pay and no back pay when they return.

Who knows? But here is the list of who they are, which you might find interesting.
Senator Roger Marshall (Republican)
Senator Jerry Moran (Republican)
Representative Ron Estes (Republican)
Representative Tracey Mann (Republican)
Representative Derek Schmidt (Republican)
Oh, and one Democrat, Representative Sharice Davids.
The Republicans have voted at least 9 times to reopen the government, and each of those times Democrats voted against reopening the government.
I hope other politicians WILL step up and refuse their paychecks. And MAYBE some will be the very senators causing the government to BE shut down while they pass the buck, pass the blame, and tell woe-is-them stories.
The government WILL reopen, and it's up to the Democrats to make that happen. IF the government DOES reopen without the Democrats, it will be by using forced options such as the nuclear one. The Democrats lose no matter which way we do this. So...
Just sit down, shut up, take your lumps and vote to pass the bill to reopen the government.
