I’m fed up with all this!

Do you remember when you used to walk into a shop to buy some small thing, you would pay for it and walk out and that was the end of it? Nowadays you often get asked for your email address or actual home address (why should I provide that??) and then afterwards get pestered for reviews. Now I understand that for some things reviews are really useful and I often read them myself if making a large purchase. But today I’ve been asked to write a review of a pack of those little plastic picture hooks you hang on the wall (I haven’t even opened the packet yet), some bird food I sent for, and my recent visit to the local shop when I bought a few sweets for Hallowe’en. Requests for reviews for online purchases generally arrive in my inbox before the item I’ve ordered has even turned up, never mind proved its worth. What use is a review of something that hasn’t even been used yet? Seriously, life’s too short to waste time on these things.

In the US, we're asked for our phone number or email address to "be sure we're who we say we are" when making a purchase. I ignore those requests for reviews of the items I buy. (I prefer giving them my email address since I can just delete their email and it doesn't bother me. but giving them a phone number allows them to call at their convenience and I sleep during the daytime and that's usually when they call!) Pretty gives out my phone number to businesses so, not only do they wake me up, but then I have to get out of my bed and go to her bedroom, wake her up and tell her somebody wants to talk to her... My phone won't work in her bedroom so she has to get out of her bed, traipse into my room and take the call. She often gets mad at me for waking her up!

@Fleura We can't do that. Sometimes the business has a legitimate reason to call us... Like the hospital here in town. We both get x-rays taken there and Pretty just got a call today (on my phone) asking for her evaluation of an x-ray she just had done. When I told the nurse that Pretty was asleep, just like I was, the nurse was apologetic but still said she'd call back at a better time... I told her to call at 3 am because that's when we're both awake. The nurse said she wasn't awake then and I said that's the whole point! I used to give out a fake number that was one digit off of my real number until I got a call from the person who actually owns that number! *sigh*

@Fleura When I was minister of a Church people used to give the address of my Church as theirs when buying TVs to fool the licence people. I got endless demands from TV licensing and it was most difficult to persuade them that the Church didn’t have a TV.

@fleura Oh yes. I’m particularly irked when I get an email begging for a review of a hotel or rental apartment I’ve checked out of barely five minutes previously. Now I only review if I’ve got something worthwhile to say.

I used to leave a review only when something was either really good or really bad. But I can’t believe the gall when they expect my phone number or address. I’m not telling them that.

I agree with that. I hate it when I’m in a shop and they ask for email address …..I just want to buy this item thanks …im not looking for a pen pal ! Amazon are bad at asking about a product on the day of arrival, or before. You are right ….sometimes you just want to buy something …end of !

Exactly! I love the pen-pal comment, I should tell them that next time someone asks

I usually give out a wrong number and I have what I call a junk email that they can have, I check it about once a month and just delete everything cause I know nothing is going to be important in there.

I think you have the right idea there - set up an extra free email account just to give out.

Right there with you. And I will add in being constantly asked to round up for some cause. Enough already!

Yes that seems to have recently become a 'thing' here too. Donate an extra 20p to 'charity'. They don't even tell you what charity it is!

@porwest And of course they get extra 'Brownie points' for their good deed even though the money they are donating didn't come from them in the first place.

@Fleura The thing most people don't realize is that this is actually a way to boost profits for the companies. Someone will say, "But they have to pay it to a charity." Sure, but they also have to "administrate" the funds they collect to be distributed, and what does that mean? They can keep "fees" to cover the "cost of administration," which means technically... They keep some of the money.

I have this same annoying problem. I buy things and I am asked to write a review before the items arrive to my apartment. I am so tired of this new system to conduct business.

We've been asked for a review on a service. We phoned a service provider who promised they'd call back within 24 hours. They want a review but they haven't called back yet.

I don't like being asked for a review. I like to give it because something exceeded my expectations.

I agree. You can write reviews only about things you have used. How can you have any opinion about things you have never seen or used !! It's really irritating.
