Fourteen free eggs for us

At short notice, I rang my cousin to ask if we could take our Bavarian visitors to their farm, which they purchased from my father. They were in Tasmania but, to cut a long story short, they were happy for us to visit and to take our guests on a tour. We were also asked to collect the eggs and fill the garden ponds. They don’t have many hens but there were 14 eggs for us to collect all in the one nest. The reddish-brown chooks (chickens) are Isa Brown’s and very quiet, as you can see. They make ideal hens for families as they are good layers and make great pets.

Eggs can be up to $10 a dozen here so I was very pleased to get some for free. I hope you're doing well.

@JudyEv Ten dollars for a dozen eggs. No wonder you are excited to get some free ones, good grief! That's a lot.

@MarieCoyle I know it is a lot more than you pay over there but comparing prices between countries doesn't really work. I mostly pay about $6 but that's still probably three times when you have to pay.

It’s great if they can afford to keep chickens around their home. Of course, one downside to having them is dealing with the smell and the noise they can create. Still, it’s nice to have them, as they provide food for us—not just fresh eggs, but meat as well.

These are far enough away from the house that there is very little noise and no smell. They have a large area to roam in.

They are good fun and have unique personalities. It's like most pets. When you get to know them well and they know you, they all have their own little quirks.

You have been lucky, so many eggs and fresh from the farm they are so much better.

@JudyEv - I know that hens eat the eggs. I remember when my grandmother put on their heads a small cap made with old newspapers.

@LadyDuck Oh wow! I haven't heard of that. I think maybe years ago they used to cut off the tip of the beak but my memory might be wrong.

Another few days and possibly some would get broken in the nest. That sometimes leads to hens beginning to eat eggs.

Free fresh eggs, can't beat that. If I lived somewhere that I could have chickens, I would be tempted!!

That is nice. Someone at my husband's work has chickens and when there are excess eggs, she brings them to work, lays them out on a table and whoever sees them first can have them if they want. My husband has brought home a good amount recently.

@JudyEv Same here. Sometimes I go through two 18 cartons of eggs in a couple of weeks and then won't use any for a month.

They are indeed. Sometimes we use a lot of eggs then we have a spell where we don't use so many.

We don't always use a lot of eggs but it's easy to get rid of them if you need to with a few meals of scrambled eggs.
