I got to speak with a former kid client yesterday. She's 21 now!

I have kept up with the adoptive mom of a child I worked with in Oakland many years ago. The biological mom was nice, but had some issues that made it difficult for her to raise the child. The child was adopted by a "middle class" family at 3, and was raised by them in a city on the East Coast. I had worked with the child since she was about 18-months old until that point. Yesterday, I gave the adoptive mom a call, and her daughter, now 21, was there, as was the daughter's boyfriend.. Mon put me on speaker phone. We all shared some conversation, and then the daughter asked me an interesting question: Did I seem like a child 'with issues' when you worked with me?" I responded that we all have issues, but that she seemed like sweet and happy kid. We then moved on to other things. She sounded confident and articulate. I came away from the conversation in a good mood. I hope this little girl, now 21, continues to thrive.

You had a great conversation with both the Mom and the adoptive daughter. We all have issues, you are right.

She sounds like she is doing well now. I think she is considering becoming a Nurse's Assistant, or something like that.

It must feel very satisfying to hear back from children you helped in the past. Thank goodness for adoptive moms and dads. Who knows what may have happened if she stayed with the bio mom.

How nice would that have been? I thought your answer was very good. She would have been pretty happy with that I'm sure.

Awww that’s soooo… My bff is an elementary school teacher and she’s always glowing with pride whenever she shares that her former grade school students visit her.
