I carried a turkey

It was supposed to be just my mother and I for Thanksgiving so we decided we weren’t gonna do a turkey. But then my uncle called her and told her he wants to come over with his wife for Thanksgiving. And my sister-in-law asked us to invite her parents. This meant a turkey was needed.
I went to my local supermarket to get a fresh turkey but the smallest size I could find was close to fifteen pounds. I don’t drive nor do I own any kind of a shopping cart. I had to haul that turkey all the way to my mom’s house via public transportation. I put it in a shopping bag but that bag wouldn’t hold that much weight so I had to carry the bag with the turkey in my hands like it was a baby.
It was about a nine-minute walk to the train from the supermarket. I had to carry that thing up a big flight of stairs to get to the train. After about a fifteen minute train ride I got off and had to walk to a bus. From there it was a short bus ride followed by more walking to get to her house. Thankfully the walk wasn’t long. I was exhausted from this adventure. But I was glad we had a turkey we’d get to enjoy on Thanksgiving, which we did. I’ve been eating it Friday and Saturday and today. And there’s more left for tomorrow.

I’ve never had the chance to taste turkey since it’s not something easily found where we live. While I do see it occasionally in our local grocery store, it tends to be expensive and isn’t a popular choice around here. I imagine the flavor isn’t much different from that of regular chicken, except that turkey is a bit larger and has meatier portions.

@lovebuglena pretty curious about that too, but I guess I would have to find one around if I am lucky.

If you don’t overcook it it’s pretty good.

I'm glad you enjoy turkey. I usually debone our turkey after Thanksgiving and then use the meat in scrambled eggs, turkey noodle soup and in recipes that call for chicken. We eat it for one meal a week for several months after the holidays.
When I deboned the latest turkey, I got nine quart freezer bags full of meat.

You freeze leftover turkey? I’ve never tried doing that.

@lovebuglena Yes, after I debone it so I'm just freezing cooked meat. I can thaw it later (up to six months), cut it into small pieces and add some to egg omelet with veggies, make turkey noodle soup out of some or use it in place of chicken... Just freeze it in small bags so you don't keep freezing and thawing it.

@DaddyEvil Today I will eat the last bit of turkey. Hope it’s still good. I will keep in mind freezing it for the next holiday.

What an ordeal. I suppose they didn't ask what they might bring to help with the dinner. You really got your workout. Nice to have leftovers.

My uncle brought a big melon and my brother’s in-laws brought homemade pound cake.

That was quite the challenge. I'm glad you made it OK.

When I went to the store I wanted to get more than just the turkey. But there was no way I’d be able to carry it. This was challenging enough.

I couldn’t get anything else but the turkey though, which was a bummer. At first I was gonna take the turkey to my house but then I’d have to bring it to my mom and in that case I’d have to walk about half an hour with it to the train. Didn’t want to do that.

The turkey was really good! Definitely glad I got it, even though it wasn’t comfortable carrying it.
