Shoes -- On or Off?

United States

Do you, as a rule, take off your shoes and leave them outside, by your door, before you enter your home? Or, do you wear your shoes inside? Also, can you share your thoughts about those choices?

In the Indian Bengali culture we are expected to leave our shoes outside when we enter the house. In the children's home where I work the children are taught to leave their shoes at least on verandah.

I wear my shoes into the house, take them off when I get inside and then carry them to my bedroom closet. It is well below freezing in my part of Missouri right now. I don't want frostbite taking off toes. It's easier to clean a carpet than to lose toes.

I wear shoes into the house and then change into my flip flops. The carpet needs to be cleaned and actually replaced; so I don't worry when someone comes in with their shoes on.

We have no issue with shoes being worn in our house. When I am at someone else's house, if the rule is to take your shoes off, I feel very uncomfortable.

I would be willing to leave them just inside the door. Hubby has his near his chair and wears slippers in the house a lot of the time.

I take them off inside the house by the door. If I left them outside, they would get mighty cold.

I do wear my shoes inside. But I take them off shortly after I put my pocket book down on the table.

I'm a shoe wearer person. I can't deal walking barefoot or even with just socks on.

In Asian societies, it is the norm to leave the footwear outside though we have those that we wear exclusively inside. It is the culture that we are brought up with. I follow that.

It’s always shoes off when entering the house. I don’t want all the dirt from outside coming in — you never know where those shoes have been. And afterwards, I just pick them up and put them back in their proper place.

I take my shoes off as soon as I enter my home, and while I don’t ask others to do it, I wish they would. My apartment has carpet, and we know how carpet seems to keep all the allergens and dirt even with repeated vacuuming. My best friend always takes her shoes off as she knows how I feel, and I appreciate it. And if someone indicates they want me to take my shoes off in their house, I happily do it. It just rarely happens.

I do not wear inside the shoes that I wear outside. When I come home, I take off my outside shoes, wear inside slippers and move the outside shoes to the bedroom closet.

I wear my shoes inside but take them off when I get in here. I just walk around in socks. I would never expect a visitor to take off their shoes though. I think that is obnoxious.
