Over a centenary of Girl Guiding

Western Australia recently celebrated 110 years of Guiding. Previously known as The Girl Guides Association, it is now known as The Guide Association. Robert Baden-Powell started the Boy Scouts in England in 1908 and asked his sister, Agnes, to form a similar association for girls. Both are now global movements sharing similar values focussing on character, outdoor skills and service. One of the first branches of the Girl Guides to open in West Australia was Bunbury, which began in November, 1915. It is a worthwhile movement fostering friendship and personal growth along with learning to be responsible citizens. One of the highlights of the movement is the Jamborees which are planned from time to time in different states and or countries. I’m wondering how well known it is, if at all, in your region. The photo is mine.

Here they're called Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America, BSA) and the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA). (The former Boy Scouts of America now accept girls also while the Girl Scouts are a girls only organization.) Scouting America emphasizes outdoor adventure, while GSUSA focuses on girls' empowerment, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), and civics, though both offer badges and activities. They have chapters in most towns and cities. Pretty wasn't interested (and her mom and I were getting divorced) when she was the right age to join. (Anything I put Pretty into, her mom took her back out so I finally stopped.)

Thanks for the information on how it is there. Our boys went to Cubs and Scouts for a few years.

@JudyEv You're welcome. I wish I could have gotten Pretty into it for a while. I'm sure your boys enjoyed themselves.

@DaddyEvil Living on the farm, I had little opportunity to join any of these sorts of organisations.

We had something similar in Italy. Our girls and boys scouts were called lupette and lupetti.

Perhaps the movement there is based on some of the same values.

Not quite sure we have those in the US. We have Boy and Girl scouts, or whatever they are calling themselves now and at one time they also had Campfire Girls. They were never as possible as Girl Scouts.

It sounds something similar at least. Such organisations are mostly good for children.

Everyone in America loves the Girl Scouts…because of those delicious cookies! I was never interested in scouting, so I never pursued the Brownies or Girl Scouts.

@JudyEv — they do in America, and I blame them for the obesity problem in the country with those samoas and thin mints. At least they only are available once a year, or we’d be a lot fatter.

I haven't heard that they still sell cookies. Bob-A-Job was popular back in the day too.

It had a huge following once. I don't know how popular it is now.

We have the Girl Scouts, as has been mentioned. I was one for years and loved it. They have different levels as you age, Brownies are for the very young, then Junior Girl Scouts. Following that is the Cadette Girl Scouts that takes you to high school, then the Senior Girl Scouts. Unfortunately, very few stay in it to advance in the last category, I guess being in Girl Scouts isn't cool anymore. It's too bad, as it was a lot of fun.

It seems to be still quite popular here. I'm not sure of the heirarchy. It used to be Brownies then Girl Guides but it could all be changed now.

@JudyEv When I was growing up, it was very popular. I still see Girl Scouts selling cookies at times here, so I know we have some local groups.

I am a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts. My area has a lot of teenagers involved in Scouting both male and female. One of the biggest challenges some areas of this country has is adult involvement and this area a lot of parents want to help in some way. I'm in Southern California USA where the weather is good most of the time.

I know there is an emphasis on outdoor involvement here. We're lucky to have such nice weather most of the time.

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are good for the children to belong. Girl Guiding is a good thing.

I've never heard of the Girl Guides. I was a Camp Fire Girl for a short period of time until our leader got divorced and dissolved the group.
