Garage/Yard Sales

I know, it’s not garage sale weather in most of the United States, but I sure do want to have one when it is. I think I could make a decent amount of grocery money if I could just find a place to have one. My dad has said no on using his house, and our apartments aren’t going to allow one. I’m thinking of asking around in the next few months to see if someone wants to have one, and if they mind if I contribute with my things. I’d be glad to work the sale with them. My best friend wouldn’t mind having one, but her house is way out in the boonies. Do you guys have garage sales, ever? I know they are a lot of work though.

Pretty did two garbage sales at our last house. I helped with the first one but told her that was enough for me. She decided it was easier to donate things we don't use anymore to a local thrift store after that. That does remind me that we need to go through the garage again and take a load of stuff to the thrift store... Maybe this coming spring.

I’ve always donated my stuff, but I need to find a way to make a little money, and I have two brand new vacuums I think I could get a decent price for. One of the vacuums is more like what businesses use.

@AmbiePam I understand. I hope you can find a place to have your garage sale and you can get plenty of extra money from the things you sell. When Pretty graduated from college, I drove to Pennsylvania to bring her home. All the kids were trying to decide what to take home again and what to leave. We rented a small U-Haul trailer to hook to our car because Pretty had too much stuff to fit in the car with us. MOST of the kids were leaving all kinds of things they couldn't fit into their/or their parents' vehicles. When they saw us rent the U-Haul, kids she knew started giving her stuff they didn't have room for. We ended up bringing home six vacuums besides the one Pretty took with her. They gave her towels and washcloths, college textbooks, silverware sets, televisions... etc. If they needed it at college, they left it behind. When we got home, we did a garage sale with all that stuff. That was our first garage sale. I believe Pretty collected around $800 from that sale. And there were some items nobody bought. That was the beginning of our second garage sale. We just waited a year and had another one and included stuff we didn't want at home anymore. One of my nieces brought stuff she and her mom didn't want anymore and told Pretty the money was hers. Garage sales are a pain in the tush! People going to garage sales can be a pain in the tush. Set a time for your garage sale to start and random people will arrive the day before wanting to go through the stuff you're wanting to sell and offer pennies on the dollar of your asking price. And they're persistent. Even when I kept telling them they could check stuff out the next day, they still wanted to go through it TODAY! We told them we were busy and didn't have time to let them go into our house and look at things we didn't want. I had ot close the door in their faces and ignore them knocking and ringing the doorbell. (I disconnected the battery operated doorbell because one lady wouldn't stop ringing it.)

Ah, I love hosting yard/garage sales! Do you have a fleamarket in your area? If so, you can set up your sale there!

Years ago when my kids were younger and a particular sweet neighbor used to live in the neighborhood, she and I would have yard sales on the same day. But I haven't had one in awhile.

It sounds like it was an ordeal, but better with a buddy.

@AmbiePam Yes, it was more successful with another yard sale going on at the same time.

We do not have garage sales here in Italy. May be you can ask around and find someone who will let you use his/her garage.

I like going to them. But I am too far out to do good having one. I thought about hauling stuff to the farmer's market but they cancelled that this year. If you have one of those near you could ask them

Having a combined one sounds a good idea but how you find another person to have it with may not be easy.

If someone isn’t already thinking of having one, I wouldn’t try to convince them to have one just because I asked. I wouldn’t want to guilt trip someone. Our church has one every summer to raise money for the youth group, and I’ve given huge amounts of items to them before, but the profits go to the youth group. It would be so weird to ask them to set aside the money from things I brought. Selfishly, I wish I could!

I hope you find somewhere to have it. They are too much work for me anymore. I have a bunch of stuff that hubby bought and never used. Everything is still in the original packages. I have to find some way to sell all that.

I haven't had one for maybe 5-6 years. They are very popular in my area in the summertime. But I know that it is so hard to make money from them unless you have a ton of stuff...and it seems children's clothing and toys are a huge draw. But you truly do earn your money--all of the getting ready, pricing, planning, boxing and unboxing...it's a lot of work.
