Hijacking discussions - aye or nay

I’ve heard about ‘hijacking a post’ and wondered if anyone would like to comment. I’m not too sure what it even is. The other day I found myself responding to many responses/comments then suddenly realising it wasn’t my discussion. Because it was about the Australian carnage at Bondi Beach, at some stage I thought it was my post and started responding to the comments. I went back and deleted a heap but it made me wonder if I needed to. I sometimes see others join in on an occasional comment and I never mind if people carry on a discussion on one of my discussions as I think it’s all pennies anyway but I wondered how others feel.

I’ve only minded, and it’s not like it happens often, when it’s about something very personal to me. I was talking about one of Hudson’s illnesses once, and a lady who had studied that particular ailment in school started to answer all the replies in my discussion before I could get to them. While she studied something in school, I was talking about a real life person I loved and experienced life with. I was kind of put off because I was not speaking in the abstract (this was about two years ago). You actually responded to a FourWalls post the other day, and your response almost sent me down the hijack road. But I told myself this was not meant directly for me, and I’m not going to do it. But she wouldn’t have cared! And knowing which post you’re talking about, I doubt that person would have minded either. After all, you were the first person I thought of when I saw the news about the massacre.

It's all pennies to either the writer or other members so mostly it doesn't concern me. I have read one where an expert did more or less take over. I don't know if it's the same discussion you've mentioned.

If you ever want to hijack any of my discussions, please feel free. I can always answer under your answers. (I used to hijack discussions all the time. ) I have seen people delete everything I said on their discussion, though. *shrug* That's totally up to them.

@JudyEv I've deleted responses and comments when they were inappropriate. I used to have problems with a troll on this site.

I don't think I've every deleted a comment. I've deleted a response when it's appeared twice.

I really dont mind it. You can literally takeover someones post if you have knowledge about a topic and you havent violated any mylit rules.

That's true. You just need to be respectful of other members.

It depends on how it’s done. There was someone here, many years ago, who’d correct everyone’s grammar and use of English in discussions and replies, and that was positively ANNOYING. I haven’t had a paper graded like that since I left college thirty years ago! People who have experience, however, please contribute. I’d love to post a song and have someone say, “You know, I met that person and asked him/her/them to do that song because I loved it so much.” Or, “did you know….?” Chances are very good that I don’t know!

@FourWalls "There was someone here, many years ago, who’d correct everyone’s grammar and use of English in discussions and replies " I think I too faced something similar but in a smaller way. I believe that might have been the same user who objected to me writing about International Cricket Tournaments saying that Cricket is not International enough!!

@FourWalls With teams from US, many European countries taking part in big scale cricket tournaments, what more one needs for it to be international?

Some do like to show their knowledge but that's mostly okay too. As you say, it depends how it's done.

Joining in on a comment is not a violation and many do. I am sure it would have not been necessary to delete your comments.

Sometimes I'm a little put off if I make a comment and they don't respond as they are intent on speaking to each other. Other than that, I don't mind much.

The only time I mind is when the discussion goes off on a tangent and doesn't interest me but I still get notifications that someone responded, but they didn't respond to ME... I often will add my nickel's worth to others responses but I don't think I cause any offence... do I?

Some newcomers do that - respond to a response, rather than to the original post. It never worries me.

I could care less. If it's under your discussion you still get the points for it

I have been in a couple of long discussions with many points discussed to and fro. After a point in tie, with too many conversations, one fees like getting lost !! It happened to me a few times. And yes at times such "Post Hijacks" also happen !

I am fine with it. I do get a bit lost sometimes with who is replying to which comment.

I remember that happening to me some years ago but not recently. Sometimes weird things happen in our cyber world.

Some people get involved with a particular subject and enjoy discussing it. I don't have a problem with it.

@judyev I feel unreasonably miffed sometimes when I’ve been left out in a conversation started on my post by others. I don’t think it matters but I’d prefer it if they’d just write a post of their own. But then it was my post that sparked this other conversation. And if it results in more pennies I’m ok with it.

I hope I have the idea for this site correct. To me, its not too take over a post by answering but to be friendly and if somebody says something of interest, I jump into the thread. I hope that is neighborly and not ruining somebody's day. I totally understand why you would say something about that atrocity.

That's my opinion exactly. It's enjoyable to have a 2,3,4-ways conversation going.

I join in when I feel a compelling urge to add my input. I know some may not take kindly to such "intrusions" while others may just accept them - not sure wthether they welcome them.

I'm fine with it. It can make for much more interesting discussions if there are a few contributing their views.
