The Golden Girls was a sitcom with an ensemble cast and aired from 1985-1992. It was created by Susan Harris.
From the strains of "Thank You for Being a Friend", this popular series had fans enthralled with the themes of aging, dating at middle age, friendship and family. The show was set in Miami and revolved around four single women sharing a house owned by Blanche. Many times in the late evening, the four would gather around the kitchen table, eat cheesecake or some other tasty dessert and discuss their problems.
Cast:
Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur) - A no-nonsense divorced schoolteacher
Rose Nylund (Betty White) - A Minnesotan optimist, widow and grief counselor
Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan) - A confident Southern belle, widowed and very into dating
Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) - A Sicilian, widow and Dorothy's lively mother who joined the group when her retirement home burned down
The show won 2 Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series and 3 Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy; and each actress won a Primetime Emmy Award.
Some of the guest stars were Dick Van Dyke, Burt Reynolds, Bob Hope, Mickey Rooney, Sonny Bono and George Clooney..
Spinoffs from The Golden Girls were Empty Nest and The Golden Palace.

The Golden Girls was on television in the evenings when I was working evenings until 10 pm. I watched them as reruns. I've never heard of the other two shows.

I started catching the reruns when I was around 19, and have been hooked ever since. I have all seven seasons on DVD, Golden Girls dish towels, Golden Girls coasters (I got free), tumblers, spatula and other wooden utensils, a phone popit (you might get a popit if you get a smartphone), and a Golden Girls shirt that says, “Picture it, Sicily…” The shirt was a gift from my sister, and a MyLot friend got me a Golden Girls tumbler for Christmas this year.
I absolutely love love this show. It’s my favorite sitcom ever.

There are few shows I say are "the funniest of all time." Night Court comes to mind. I always liked that one (the original one). Cheers was fun to watch and usually pretty funny. Seinfeld is hilarious. Back in the day All in the Family, The Jeffersons and Three's Company provided multiple guffaws.
Golden Girls was also a show I liked and never failed to make me laugh. It's on my list of "greats."
As for the spinoffs, I did not like either of them.

this show will always be a great classic... I still watch episodes on Hulu occasionally. Golden Palace was good too.

And here I remember Andrew Gold’s “Thank You for Being a Friend” when it was a hit in 1977.
That’s a classic show, for certain!
