Yes, this will be a controversial pick…only in that you’d probably think it should be in the “others” list instead of the music list. However, if it wasn’t for music none of us would have known this man. Here’s today’s contribution to music that we lost in 2025. Carl Dean Carl Dean was a successful asphalt contractor in Nashville. And you think, “So what?” Well, he also happened to be Mr. Dolly Parton. Carl Dean met the young unknown in 1964 at the Wishy Washy laundromat in Nashville. Dolly said he was impressed that he looked her in the eye instead of the chest. They married in 1966, and they stayed married until his death last March. You don’t get that in country music. In fact, the song he sort of inspired implied that he was an easy mark for any woman who wanted to take him. Dolly explained that was actually an over-dramatization of a joke. Very early on (before she became a star), a bank teller would flirt with Dean when he went in the bank. He liked the attention. Parton said she joked, “Hell, you’re spending a lot of time at the bank. I don’t believe we’ve got that kind of money!” The bank teller’s name never appeared in the song, though. That came from an eight-year-old who asked Parton for her autograph. Dolly said she loved the child’s name: Jolene. Dean went to one awards show with Parton. After it, he said he’d never go to another one. He was very content to stay out of the limelight and the crazy world of celebrity that followed his wife around. If you listen to her tribute to him, “If You Hadn’t Been There,” you’ll hear her heartbreak of losing the love of her life. Without question, in the crazy world of entertainment, Carl Dean was Dolly’s rock. Carl Dean Born Carl Thomas Dean, July 20, 1942, Nashville, Tennessee Died March 3, 2025, Nashville, Tennessee (long illness) (age 82) The song he inspired, “Jolene”:

I don't about him. The story is a heartwarming one. They had long decades of togetherness and they did stand as rock for each other.

From everything I read about him, he didn’t want to be known about. In fact, Dolly said in the 80s that some people accused her of not being married and that she had “invented” a “husband.” She said, “We should pose on the cover of a magazine so people can see I’m not married to a wart.”

Jolene is one of the few Parton songs that I like. BTW, I finally found the info on who the doctor was opposite Dr. Kildare. It was Ben Casey starring Vince Edwards.

I remember him more because John D. Loudermilk did a song about him.

@FourWalls Oh my word! I always watched Dr. Kildare. The few times I saw Ben Casey that old guy was saying "Ben Casey, Ben Casey".....

She talks about that song and her marriage to Carl Dean in many of the interviews I've listened to. She is a favorite of mine. I think she is a marvelous human being is one I would enjoy meeting. Their marriage was good, but I just wonder how different it would have been if he traveled with her more. If they were together more.

I'm not one of her fans but until about 2 years ago I can't remember ever hearing about him. I do recall that tune tho, I have a couple friends who actually love country western and of course one of em is a die hard dolly fan as well as a die hard fan of Kenny Rodgers .... now him I used to like way back but he changed

Dolly’s a national treasure, and I don’t know if she could have accomplished half of what she”s done without his stability.

@FourWalls I am sure that his passing was crushing for her, they were married for nearly 60 years. And yes, I agree, Dolly is indeed a treasure.

I appreciate you mentioning him. He was the man behind the woman, and he never minded. God bless him for being man enough to let Dolly Parton shine in the light she deserves. No one does it alone.

Oh, like country music geek would leave him off? No matter what insanity she had in her day, she had him to come home to and be normal with. I think of that line in “Touch Your Woman”: “You know exactly what I need And I always go to sleep in peace, Thanking God that you belong to me.”

It is very rare for a couple who are in show business for their marriage to go the distance since it is hard for the male to live under the shadow of the female.

You think that in the entertainment industry a 60-day relationship is “long,” never mind sixty years. It’s true for nearly all of us now.

@FourWalls Yes, it is true that we just need to know our partner's feelings and live with them as best as we can. That is enough for me.

You have to think that she’s had a wild ride in her career that few others have, with all the different things she’s done AND being a woman. She really needed that support.
