Huh? Hillbilly’s a soap fan? Yeah, I know. This was a time that everybody was caught up in the love story, and that included me. Today I salute one of the principal characters in what may be the most memorable daytime soap storyline in history.
Anthony Geary
The early 80s were the era of the ABC soap opera General Hospital storyline involving Luke and Laura. So ubiquitous in America that Christopher Cross had a hit about her, called “Think of Laura.” Anthony Geary was the focal point as Luke Spencer alongside Genie Francis as Laura Baldwin Spencer. Their marriage on the soap was watched by 30 million people. Let me put that in perspective: Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s wedding only had a little over 14 million U.S. viewers.
Geary holds the record for most Daytime Emmy awards, with eight. That ties him with Clovis Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus with most acting Emmys ever, period.
Oh, remember what I said about women going ga-ga over Richard Chamberlain and he turned out gay? Geary was definitely a “heartthrob” in the Luke & Laura era…and he was gay. In fact, he moved to Amsterdam upon retiring from acting, where he lived the rest of his life with his spouse.
I wasn’t much of a soap opera fan, but Luke and Laura captivated the country…including me.
By the way, the series General Hospital took a beating last year in the obituaries. Here are the other actors from the series who passed in 2025, all but one of whom were on the program during the “heyday” of the Luke and Laura storyline:
*Leslie Charleson (died January 12, age 79): she played Dr. Monica Quartermaine, a member of the premiere family on the soap.
*Denise Alexander (died March 5, age 85): she played Lesley Webber from 1973 to 2009, one of the longest tenures of a role in soap history.
*Chris Robinson (died June 9, age 86): he played Rick Webber.
*Jack Betts (died June 12, age 96): he was on General Hospital in the early 60s as Ken Martin.
*Tristan Rogers (died August 15, age 79): he was the agent Robert Scorpio beginning in 1980 and ending in 2024. And, personally, he was also almost a separate entry.
*André Landzaat (died September 21, age 81): he was the villain Tony Cassadine in the GH Luke & Laura era.
Anthony Geary
Born Tony Dean Geary, May 29, 1947, Coalville, Utah
Died December 14, 2025, Amsterdam, Netherlands (surgical complications) (age 78)

I remember listening to co workers talking about that wedding but the only soap I ever watched was Dark Shadows. I had a crush on the ghost Quinten, I was young at the time so naturally now I look back and wonder what the hell I saw in that actor

@JudyEv — no, sure haven’t, but I like the name of the town it’s set in…”Summer Bay.” That sounds so peaceful!

@FourWalls I did see that name but wasn't sure it was the same program or a different one. I think there was a wedding on Home and Away that had a lot of viewers too. The actors were Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan. The wedding was in 1987 and watched by wo million Australian viewers. It aired in the UK in 1988, and was watched by 20 million viewers. You may not have even heard of the show!!

AS a long time GH fan (and still watch it every day} it was indeed very sad to hear about Anthony Geary passing. GH did lose quite a few key characters recently

That was the last soap I watched. I used to watch The Secret Storm with my mom in 1979. I went to boot camp, was gone for three months, and the storyline hadn’t changed a bit in those three months. That put me off soap operas until Luke & Laura.

@FourWalls soaps do have a way of dragging out a storyline. Gh isn't too bad like that but occasionally they'll drag out a story and it does get tedious. Laura is still on GH and is the mayor

One soap opera I watched with my mom didn’t move the storyline a bit while I was in boot camp, so I gave up on it. The only thing I know about any soap anymore is that Victor Newman on The Young and the Restless is still evil.
(I used to watch Eric Braeden 60 years ago when he was the German officer in The Rat Patrol!)

@FourWalls Way back, my mom and I would start with All My Children, Days of Our Lives and end with General Hospital. Sometimes, I'd have to record on VHS if I was at work. Over the years, life happened, long work hours, kids, etc. so lost track. One time, I began the Edge of Night and liked it, watching until it ended. While in college, my Spanish class had us watch a Spanish soap opera and write a report what we thought they were saying and what it was about. I got hooked even not knowing Spanish well. By the time it ended, I could recite the whole story line. I loved it.

The only time I watched General Hospital was when I was home with a spazzing back for a couple of weeks.

The Luke and Laura storyline happened at a perfect time for me: I worked in the squadron store from 6-2, so I was home in time to see it.
